If you have some extra fenders and guards laying around, try the RaT-ina / faux-tina / surreal rust on them to match your main frame and tank.

You've already got some real rust on the fenders, so you can preserve that along the way. One thing that the patina process requires is a good eye for color and the hues and subtleties. From the logo you created, I can tell you already have that innate skill!

Now you just have to use it to re-create the look of the frame / tank to the fenders. I would try to match the white tips and tails and pinstripe to the more cream color on the tank, for starters. And then pick out the 3-4 colors in the 'reddish brown' hues you find in the frame. I have actually brought bike frames , saddles, etc with me to my local HomeDepot or Ace Hardware to hold rattle cans of paint up to them to get the best possible matches. And then, the best is if you can find your colors in Flat or Matte finish. Even Satin will be too shiny. Remember, this bike has been sitting around for 70+ years getting weathered and aged. Ain't much shine left.

It's a layering and extremely light spraying process from usually 2-4 feet away once you start blending. And then, to preserve your natural rust and the rust-ina that you create, you can use the mustard method to save those spots where you want the rust to show through.

When you are satisfied with the end result, I like to use the Dead Flat Clear to finish it off and seal all of your creative work. It will take any shine that might have come from the cans or the blending of different colors and textures.

Maybe those two things aren’t mutually exclusive?

I agree. Fauxtina the blue in the fenders to tone it down a bit to a similar aged feel of the tank. I think the two colors could compliment each other well.

This thread is moving at a snail's pace. Started painting the hoops and am going to try and mix in some aging tips that @OddJob so graciously shared . The basecoat is gloss burgundy with satin colonial red phased in with some different shades of brown misted in around the edges. Next will do the creme pins and then further the aging process (without introducing actual rust to this fine set of hoops)

Wow, those rims look great already! I’d be interested to see how you do the pins.
Two-person job. My friend Dyno Dan, who I get together with on Wednesday nights and tinker on bikes with, is an excellent free-hand pin striper. We also have the Beugler brand pin striper. What we did on my 42 Elgin fenders was he held the Beugler and I took a deep breath and spun them manually.

I'm eargerly anticipating the RaT-ina. One of the best ways to age or just tame down a deep or bright color is to do a very light, long range mist of a light color in the same quadrant of the color wheel. So for a dark red like this, one of my all-time favs is Rustoleum Satin Strawflower.

Here is an example where I used the Strawflower color first and then some of the Satin Cinnamon and Multicolor texture spray.

Good luck!

Alrighty then! A little more progress tonight on the hoops. My buddy Dyno Dan manned the Beugler while I spun the hoop and Norm filmed. We used an easel with stops left and bottom to rotate against.
First time adding a video. I think I need to read up on the process.

Next, after allowing the pins to dry I added some dusting from several feet away to add some faux-tina.

Love the craftmanship and the teamwork there!

Video turned out well! And remember, when it comes to faux-tina, you can always add more. It's harder to 'take away'.

If you want to check your progress for the effects, take the hoops (or whatever you are adding the RaT-ina to) outside and you'll be able to see the changes better in the natural light.

Looking good so far!

RaT-ina oN~!

That is awesome. I've had one of these for almost 10 years and I still haven't used it a single time. :D

How do you post your longer videos? Sorry if it's posted on here somewhere - but my video was 30 seconds and it said it was too long.

It definitely helps to have an extra hand, that's for sure!

YouTube. I'm going to start a channel at some point so I can post videos, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
That's by far the easiest way. Just keep them unlisted, then they don't clutter you YT account (I have a few hundred videos stored there, but only very few of them are visible outside of the forums I post them in.
