brake issues

Hey all! I have and old western flyer that I'm having a litttle trouble with. After I got it back together I went for a ride and when I would apply the brake the crank would turn about a quarter turn before slowing. And the more I ride it the the worse it it gets. Also now it is making a slugges feeling when applying the brake. Can anyone give me any ideal what is going on. Thanks!

what sort of hub is it? i know it is a coaster but who made the hub? if it has not been overhaulled it could use it most likely and if it is a new depaurture it will deff need it.
