I believe Hawthorne's were sold by Montgomery Wards if you didn't already know that.

You've got a Hawthorne with tires from [a] Sears then. There were several bikes that looked like this, shared these parts, all the dept store brands from around this time. With that kind of rust, I'd find something that fits the parts (I remember seeing a Rollfast that seemed to) and go for that.

Does that sissy bar clamp-on at the bottom vs. bolt to the axle?

very cool bike talk about true rat this is it!! i would name it tetnus shot (sorry i know i spelled that wrong. i am not sure but i dont think you can really date code those like schwinns. i would guess early 60's
