Nice to see the truss rods actually installed on a bike instead of buried in a pile of stuff :D

I've been meaning to ask what those truss rods are after seeing pictures of them in the forum.

They are mostly ornamental, but I think they were advertised as a sort of front suspension/structural addition.
Some early bike ads claimed that the front forks flexed a little bit and the truss rods carried the load to the top of the steerer tube.

It seems to be raining truss rods here...I just made a set with 4' of 5/16" rod and a Schwinn bracket I got for $2 at a swop meet near Chicago last weekend also got a big Hiller chrome light and converted it to a 3W star LED put the batterys (3 AAA nmh's) inside and a toggle sw where the gen terminal was. Had to weld up a mount should have that on soon. Also lengthening the fork I had on it for a spare.

Latest additions 3watt LED headlight and fork mounting.Rode it to work today 15mi I think smoother tires would be wise. I have been thinking Kenda Krads or red brick or creme bricks what do you guys think?

i love that rack. you're giving me ideas for my old Murray :)

i've got some of those Bontrager Comfort tires with "Triple Puncture Protection" on mine, but they've gone way up in price locally since i bought them. they'd be much smoother than your tires.

keep us posted on what you do with the Murray. that 15 mile commute is impressive! i haven't gotten out of the neighborhood with mine.

The rack had a very close fit to the tire and after I built the tail lights I needed more space so I "Z" bent the front rack mount bars to bring it forward which brought it up to clear the battery box that is under the rack. The electronics for the tail lights is a cheap bike taillight board wired to some Spyder hi-intensity LED's 2 in each lense the bezels are 3/4" conduit nuts.

The head light is an old Hiller that I converted to a 3watt Luxion Star LED with 3AAA nmh batterys in the case and the sw where the gen terminal was. These are the parts minus the batt holder. The LED is the thing with the bolt its upside down setting on a socket while the thermal epoxy between the bolt and the Led package cures.

Cut the old fork tube and added about 5/16" to length and tigged it up last night. Now I need to make or find a seat scuff bar.

Oh yeah! And some cream bricks would be mondo cool!

Red..or creme..or Krads? the red would look cool with the red grips. I made some progress on an alternate fork with homebuilt truss rods. Im thinking of putting the extra Schwinn TR bracket under the lower bearing race and use this as the anchor for truss rod braces that angle out at the same angle as the main rods and tig the ends to the main rods they would meet at the same angle as the main rod bend. I may find some 5/16" shaft clamps and use those to couple the rods together. That might look a little more old school. Well its Saturday and I think I'll go out and play....I have some cash from selling the wifes old bike (2000 Fuji) and I have a line on 2 1940's bikes one is a Western Auto boys has straight bar frame the other is a Lincoln girls in great shape. Oh and working on a flame thrower for chain stays or rack butane tank hidden in bike tank .

Sorry but I flipped the bars. But which fork and trus rod combo do you all like?
truss rods home built with sharp bends and Schwinn bracket The fork is a bit slimmer and taller.

I could flop truss rods fork to fork but got lazy. Thinking of making a new bracket for light, lower and pulled in closer between the rods. I also need to find a leather seat bag or old tin canister for the BBQ igniter .
