This is a '60s Sears Spyder 5 speed that I found literally in a barn, under decades of dust and jammed up in a corner surrounded by other rusty steeds.
I was able to salvage the frame and fork and a few parts from the original bike. The other parts were either new replacement parts or re-used parts from my shelves in the BACK40 custom bike building shed. Here is a list of what all went into the build:
* Sears Spyder 5 speed frame and fork original to the bike
* Fenders, chain guard, seat post, handlebars and grips, shift box and lever, pedals, and cable guide tube all original
* New rear wheel with new 6 speed FW
* New rear tire Tioga Powerblock 24 x 1.75
* Used front wheel from a Schwinn Fastback
* Used front tire Vee Speedster 24 x 1 3/8
* NOS banana seat from the '80s
* Used sissy bar, chopped and custom sprung
* New brake calipers and single 'double pull' brake lever
* Used long arm ashtabula crank and chain ring
* New cables and housing
* New Shimano 6 speed rear derailleur
My biggest joy in this build was the two-tone RaTsberry fade paint job, and the smoked chrome job on the fenders, brake calipers, handlebars, chain ring, sissy bar, crankset, and shift box. This was my first attempt at the use of the Dupli-Color Metalcast paint and smoke process. Lots of fun, and I think it really set this apart from every other build I have done in the past. Hope you enjoy the process photos that follow....and....
RaT oN~!
