The original Dandy Bicycle Parade was conceived by a small group of volunteers to promote Cumberland, MD. The connection of bicycle events, and Cumberland's location as the junction of the C & O Canal Path and the Great Allegheny Passage, seemed a logical route to pursue.

The first Dandy Parade was held in 2008. The second Parade was held in 2009 and followed the success of the the first.

The Parade was discontinued in the following years due to a shortage of volunteers.

The New Annual Dandy Bicycle Parade and Swap Meet, Kurt Detwiler Memorial, August 23, 2014.

The title “The New Annual Dandy Bicycle Parade” was chosen to show a break between the Parades of the past and the 2014 Parade. Once the 2014 Parade is over, the name the Annual Dandy Bicycle Parade, will be resumed.

The memorial to Kurt Detwiler, is for his invaluable efforts in the earlier Parades. His friendship and participation will be missed. (Kurt worked for the Cumberland Trail Connection and was a member of the Western Maryland Wheelmen.)

The earlier Parades, primarily, concentrated on decorated bicycles (children and adults). We hope to expand the New Parade to include:

  • Decorated Bicycles

  • Antique Bicycles

  • Rat Rod/Homemade Bicycles

  • BMX Bicycles and Demo

  • Swap Meet

  • Music

  • and Other Venues

The Parade will begin and end at Canal Place. It will travel up Harrison St., turn left on S. Centre St. cross the Baltimore St. Mall and down N. Centre, make a left on Frederick St. followed by a left on Liberty St., then back to Harrison St. and Canal Place. We hope to have additional events, food vendors and music at the Canal Place Festival Grounds following the Parade. Start time for the Parade is 10:00 am, Saturday, August 2014.
