Three speed thoughts

Too cold to build much so I'm looking at parts and thinking of things...

I don't like the look of a derailluer on a klunker style bike but I'd like to have multiple speeds. An internal hub would be great but pretty expensive.

What about a running a coaster brake rear wheel and a 3 chain ring crank with just a front derailluer? Has anyone done this? Seems simple enough and I think it would look cleaner than that derailluer hanging down.

Thoughts?

But that wont work. The first time you back pedal to stop, the tensioner will get sucked up and ripped off.

I dont know if this can be an option for you, but I have seen complete nexus 3 speeds with all hardware being sold for $50. There are also people that will build a wheel for about $25.

I've got 3 Shimano 3 speeds with hardware that I don't need, they are all freestyle though.
