Re: YZ-24 MotoBike ......NOW SOUTHERN FLYER (Boardtrack Bars)

Here's a picture of the bars by them self. The seat clamps worked out well for this. They're a little bulky compared to the originals, but I think they look kinda cool anyway. I'll cut the width after I ride it a while to get the feel for it.

The next decision to make is about the finish.
1) Paint the end pieces black.
2) Strip the black to silver metal.
3) Leave it black and silver.
I'm open to suggestions. :)

I would also like to find some torpedo grips that I can get fast and cheap... (Times running out!)

Those are brilliant!!!!
I vote for all silver on bars and bar ends. Maybe paint the stem and the possibly the clamps black.

that is a neat piece of engineering right there.
Thanks, I had been trying to come up with a way to recreate those bars for a while. I saw a box full of seat clamps at the LBS and the light bulb came on.

Plus if you do the silver bars and bar ends with a black stem and clamps the black grips would fill in nicely!

Very cool! :D You definitely captured the right look

Motostrano (forum sponsor, I think) has these for $22

Love those bars, BTW!

The whole build is coming along great!

Cheers,
Dr. T
Thanks for the heads up Dr. T. Those might just work. Glad you're liking the bars and the build!

Yep, some black grips are definite. But I don't believe I'll mess with the stem, I really like the aluminum as is.

I guess that depends on how you define right! :p
But I'm glad you like it, I think it's the right look too!

Re: YZ-24 MotoBike ......NOW SOUTHERN FLYER (Boardtrack Bars)

Well, today was a big day for me and the build. :!:

A couple of weeks ago, Rockit posted some great pix of the gun blue finish on Aunt Flow. I was so impressed with the finish that I let him know that I would probably be using his idea. I've seen other bikes online with this type of finish and they always look so warm and natural to me.

On the Southern Flyer however, I've been completely driven to build the whole bike around the fenders. And even though the bluing (which is actually more black than blue) would work with the fenders, I really like the brown metal better.

So after some research, I found out how to make the metal brown like you would find on an old gun.

Today I used the handle bar clamps to practice the process on. I couldn't be happier with the results! The metal has a bronze look to it. Tomorrow I will tackle the frame. :D

After I finished the clamps, I painted the bar ends black to have a look. I like the all silver idea, but this was quick and easy to reverse later. I really wont know until I finish the frame and put them on it.

I like the flush mount Allen bolt too. Roller blade bolts?

They're just 1/4 20 Socket Cap Machine Screws and T-nuts from Fastenal.
