Rode the Governor. The bars are uncomfortable for over 20 miles, no flat place except the grips.

Had no real plan for this, but actually logged some miles today.

I was having sort of a cruddy day, so I hopped on the Raleigh to relieve some stress..... sort of a cheater ride, road bike on a paved trail. Did 25.2 around the lake and back

272 MTD points!

Todays ride started out on the Governor but I had to go back at 16 miles as the seat and handlebars were killing my desire to continue. Thirty two miles on that thing is more than I want to do again. I used my 1982 Univega for the other miles.

This is insanity!!!!

I’m a little surprised on the discomfort.

The bike looks pretty comfortable.

Also, do you ride in cycling shorts?

Yes shorts. It was mainly the bars, no flat place except the grips. Your wrists were always bent. The bar tape is cotton with no padding. Two days on this was two much. The plan was to ride the govnor all 100 miles. With a change of bars it might be possible.

Did a new route today... headed north instead of west.

I thought I’d be smart, as the north bound ride has less pronounced elevations. (Although the first 4 miles is a steady climb)

My over- thinking hit me, as, I’m not sure how this happens, but I was on 6 different roads, going 3 different directions and somehow, no matter where I went, I had a relentless 11 mph dead head wind!

So, that was fun. I was like 8 miles in and I checked my quads to see if they were bleeding...., it felt like it!

First 13 miles were rough. Last 8 much better, but definitely not easy!

21 miles on the Raleigh, 293 MTD points.

Tell me about the Univega.

I saw one on Craigslist cheap a week or two ago. Viva Touring model.

Are they good bikes? What’s their story?

I’m done, day 31 today. I didn’t ride today. Instead I drove 100 miles to pick up my 4 wheeler at the repair shop. It has a thrown rod and would cost more to fix it than it cost new in 2002. I gave it to a young mechanic at the shop, save me from recycling it. He wants to make a go cart out of it. So that and food shopping took all day. I end with 688 points.

They were built in Japan and are sought after for touring because they were well built. It may be Mytia built. I believe after 1982 they had center pull brakes, before that cantilever brakes. Early ones had no water bottle mounts as bikes back then had few braze ones. It may have high quality straight gauge tubing to keep it rigid with a full load. My 1982 has one braze on water bottle mount. I used river nuts and JB Weld to put on a second bottle mount. I also laced up a set of 29er triple wall mountain bike rims to old style hubs. It’s a 7 speed Mega range, triple in front, 700 c by 38 tires, with modern brake lever shifting And cross top brakes.

With a 7 speed I didn’t have to spread the frame. I widened the chain stays to accommodate the wider tires and the steel tubing is very hard and difficult to dimple. It’s my gravel bike and I really like it. I think Univega was a USA company that had their bikes built in Japan.

Congrats for 688 points!

101.93mi in 9:16:21 @ an 11mph avg is astonishing to me for someone hurt. Putting that in perspective. I rode the Stingray 64 miles in 5:30 with an 11.45 avg fit and on a relatively easy course. You had to have more rest stops than me in 9 hrs. The Stingray is no slouch either @ 14.77 mph avg in 16 miles no stops. Going by your figures I'd have a heck of time keeping up with you for real.

Catch you later.

I had to stop briefly three times for food, electrolytes and resting my butt, arms and back. I stood as I was afraid if I sat down on the ground I wouldn’t want to get up. I almost fell over getting off to rest. The solution was to not stop. Despite the electrolytes I started to cramp a little towards the end, but not like I sometimes do in a race, pretty minor. I ate 5 sandwiches, a granola bar and 6 beverages. I ate tons the next day so I’m still 10 pounds heavier than I was last summer. The temps were from the upper 50s in the morning to upper 70sF, perfect for riding. My Univega gravel bike has all kinds of storage. Most of the time it seemed like I was doing 14 mph, faster on downhills but occasionally I would loose focus and drift almost to a stop. Then I would come to and peddle on. Despite the occasional lapse I did try and keep up a steady moderate pace. A lot of mental is required of me to do long rides. The last twenty miles were faster than I wanted to go because two freezing brief but intense thunder storms caught me. Very cold until they passed and I got sand in my mouth and eyes. Eye protection wasn’t enough. There was no rain predicted so this was not in my plans. I can ride 31 miles of this route on my 1991 Paramount averaging 16 mph fairly easily if you pay attention, don’t loose focus, attack the hill approaches and stand on the hills. I was in granny gear on the hills for the 100, just trying to preserve energy. The strange thing is I have a very hard time keeping up with my other 70 year old buddies on 20 mile or shorter rides but they can’t do distance. I burned a lot of energy unnecessarily by starting out on the single speed. What a joke, my original plan was to ride the single speed 124 miles. No way could that happen. It has no water bottle mounts and no place for food. Water was in my riding jersey, food in a fanny pack. I didn’t have near enough water as it was almost all gone when I switched bikes. I also went way to fast starting out. What was I thinking? The Univega shifty felt like riding a high end carbon bike after that debacle. I debated about switching to my Paramount but it was stored in the attic and I would have to use fanny and chest packs. The Univega was all set to go.

You can’t compare a stingray to a road bike, road bike gotta be easier and faster. In about 1985 there were two boys as neighbors. One of them started college and threw his stingray in the trash. I had no idea what it was but I took it and I stripped it, geared it down, replaced the 3 speed with a single speed, tossed the “stupid” banana seat and apes for BMX stuff, painted it red so my 7 year old son would like it. He was into BMX. He used it when we went camping. After he got his first mountain bike at around 12 years old I took it to the thrift store. I wish I knew then what I know now. The neighbor kid, Ron, eventually became an imaging tech at the hospital I worked at. I told him about what happened to his Stingray and he didn’t even remember owning it. After thought he said “well maybe”. That’s two of us who didn’t appreciate a true American classic. So much stuff I see on eBay now for a good price that I tossed. Dang.

Figured you must have been utterly exhausted due to your age and aches. Again, a job well done! I agree, there is little comparison. The road bike is superior.... I added performance to compete with big wheels. Have the legs for it.

D25: Nada
D26: 64mi Stingray
D27: 56mi Stingray
120 + 579 = 699

Rode the Sabertooth for a 13.56 mph avg over 4:07:48. Completed the first 28mi with a 14 mph avg. Stopped briefly to tank up on the way back. Had fast company in both directions. The bike is building a reputation among riders.
The data is so corrupt this time that more than 18miles have been added.

28mi elevation profile. Day mileage is accurate within an fraction of a mile. GPS phone data is useless to me. Never cared enough about accuracy to invest in good gear...

Likewise! Congrats @us56456712 on an awesome run.

Thank you also for creating this event!

I don’t think I’ll catch you, but I’m having a ball trying!!

Personally, this event has been great for me; as I’m a workout guy, I’m not a great diet guy.

Since Easter 2019 I dedicated myself to trying to lose 20 pounds. Keep my same workout routine, focus on cleaning up diet. (I cut my meat intake by 2/3, replaced with beans and vegetables)

At any rate, I got off 15, but really could not get the last 5.... until this event.

It kicked my workouts up from 4 a week to 7, without seeming like work.

After my 28 mile ride Saturday, I weighed in at 177.6, nearly a 1/2 pound under my 178 pound target weight.

Yay! Thanks so much to my RRB friends and @us56456712 for putting an event into place that helped me get to that elusive 20 pound target.

I don’t think I would have gotten there without you guys!

God bless

So, today’s ride is brought to you by brakes!!!

As most of my miles are on county roads and paved trails, I do have to negotiate traffic and lights on the first mile or two of any ride I take.

Today I went to turn my ride into an errand, putting my full ride in full urban mode riding on the shoulder of a 5/6 lane road.

On my way back, I about got hit by some kid making a fast left turn crossing 3 lanes of oncoming traffic to shoot into a Dominos parking lot. (He was only looking at road lanes and somehow missed me on the shoulder coming at him in my day glow yellow vest)

I’m not sure how I didn’t wreck. For a second or two, both my front and rear wheels were locked. My rear locked first, which I think is the only thing that kept me from biting it.

He missed me by a few feet max, if I hadn’t locked up, I would have t-boned him square in the passenger side door.

And finally, I should have kept my mouth shut yesterday on the wind @ 11.

Flags pinned at 14 mph today. Headwind out, fortunately tailwind back.

13 more miles on the Raleigh: 306 MTD points

Glad you made it back, Jude. Congrats on the accomplishment too. I'm stuck at a number slightly north of that...
Thanks Matti.

The “every day” I think was the biggest for me..... even if it’s just a 10 mile ride at a recreational pace. Every mile counts, every mile pushes your metabolism and helps break through that plateau.
