I left out the jazz guitarists because that is a whole different lot. I tried to narrow it down to five but came up w/ fifteen, oh well.In no paticular order......

Stevie ray vaughn
Buddy Guy
Jimmi Hendrix
Pete Townsend
Eric Clapton
B.B. King
Robin Trower
Carlos Santana
Steve Marrionet (HUMBLE PIE)
Steve Vai
Jimmy Page

Joe Satriani
Johnny Winter (in my opinion the best slide guitarist ever)

Larry Lalonde
Gaz Coombes
Nels Cline

ditto to most of the above. A couple more talented guitarist that could be on the list are C&W guitar player Roy Clark, he had some fast fingers. And where would the world be without Les Paul.

Good call on Nigel Tufnel! I'm gonna go listen to Break Like The Wind.
Oh, and for my money, Johnny Thunders is one of the all time best.

I'm going to give an Honorable Mention to the creepy kid from Deliverance. While not technically a guitar player, he sure could pick a banjo.

Now squeal like a pig!

I'll throw in my 2 cents, in no particular order:
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Junior Brown
Dave Gonzales
Chuck Berry
Eric Clapton

SRV is just awesome, JB with guit-steel doubleneck, DG is a rockabilly legend, CB was an innovator, doing things no one else was at that time, and EC can play it all.
