This is where I started doing some mock ups. At this point I really didn't like how high the bike sat. So I had to come up with some ideas.



I thought about adding some tubes to the bottom but it looked too funny. Way too many tubes. Made the down tube look ridiculously long and it didn't actually lower the bike.



Then I was checking the fit of the front fender and realized that when I pedaled and turned at the same time, my toes would hit the bottom of the front fender. So that needed to change too.

During this time I did manage to find the perfect pedals. Picked these up at PorkChopBMX.com Love 'em!!

The front sits much lower and it stretched the front wheel and fender out enough that my toes wont hit the fender anymore. Here's a mock up with the fender and both forks. You can really see the difference in height by comparing the sprocket against the peg board behind it.

 
Plus, the total length of the bike, from the tip of the front fender to the tip of the rear fender, went from 9 feet 4 inches to a whopping 10 feet!! Now it was time to lower the rear a few inches. I did that by cutting new slots in the rear drop outs and getting a lower profile rear tire. Remember to always practice safety when using power tools. Short sleeved shirt, shorts, one glove and sunglasses should do it right?! :crazy:



At least I had my little buddy to supervise me.

Here is the stock height, still not the correct rear tire yet, Amazon can be slow sometimes.



And with the wheel moved up 2 inches. It's lower but not low enough.

 
This is all I did. It's not the prettiest but it will all be hidden with the rear fender anyway.

 
Since I'm doing a hot rod inspired bike, what says hot rod better than Mooneyes? I've had this sprocket hanging around for a few years now and I finally have something worthy to use it on. Yes, I love anything Rat Fink!!

Time for some real mock ups! As you can see, after lowering it so much I had to go to shorter cranks. This will come back to bite me later. :mad:





The new rear tire finally came in too. After going from a 26" rim and tire down to a lower profile 24" rim and tire and re-working my rear cutouts , I ended out lowering the rear a total of about 4 1/2 inches. I do like how the front tire is as high as the top of the head tube.

The tank looks big but it's not that wide. Here's a good shot of how it's not going to get in the way of my knees while pedaling.

 
Now it's finally time to get to that tail light. I was sweating bullets cutting a hole in my freshly finished fender. :whew:



I needed something that had an inside diameter of 3 1/2 inches. For some reason that's not easy to find! So I was left to making one myself. I got a piece of 3" PVC pipe that had and outside diameter of 3 1/2 inches. I waxed it up and wrapped it in fiberglass. The wax is so the glass doesn't stick to it. I also had to make an end piece for the light to bolt to so I glassed up a piece of temper board. Here's a shot while I was pulling off the glass from the PVC.

Test fitting. Kinda looks like I was building a rocket bike.



This is what it looked like after glassing the end cap on and marking where I needed to trim it.



Trimmed and drilled for the light. As you can see, I replaced the red lens with and orange one.



Like a glove.

This is where I could screw it all up. If I glass it in crooked I would have to cut it all out and start over. :doh:
