Schwinn bikes ( post pics here )

I just want to wish my 1965 Typhoon a happy 50th "birthday" today! According to its serial numbers, it was "born" 4/13/1965 :)

    bicycles with car names

Although not technically a "car" name per se, here is my wife's OG '75 Schwinn Suburban to add to the mix: ;) 1949 Chevy Suburban:

    Lacing a Bendix 2-Speed Hub to a 26" S5 Rim

Thanks Gary. Yeah, it was a pretty frustrating decision to have to make considering the whole idea of this build was to do all the work myself. It didn't help that I had put a deadline on myself to try and finish this project before all the holiday craziness got started, so time turned out to be...

    Lacing a Bendix 2-Speed Hub to a 26" S5 Rim

Again, I want to thank everyone who submitted advice to help me along with this project. Unfortunately, after spending the better part of an entire afternoon and into the evening wrestling with the all the issues I encountered, I came to the painful conclusion that I might have bit off more than...

    Lacing a Bendix 2-Speed Hub to a 26" S5 Rim

So I finally got time to take the rear S5 rim completely apart and do a more precise measurement of the spokes used with the smaller 2 inch hub that was on there. Turns out they are actually 11 inches in length from the elbow to the tip of the threads. So it looks like I will need to find 10 1/2...

    Lacing a Bendix 2-Speed Hub to a 26" S5 Rim

Wow! Very helpful answers so far! Thanks to everyone who has replied. I did some rough measuring last night and the old spokes currently on the S5 rim are 10 7/8" long. So that would mean I would need to find spokes at 10 3/8" in length; does that sound correct?. To clarify, the rim pictured...

    Lacing a Bendix 2-Speed Hub to a 26" S5 Rim

Like the title says, I wanted to see if anyone has ever tackled this kind of project before or maybe something similar. The hub flange on the Bendix looks to be about 3" in diameter (see pics); the hub that came on the S5 rim when I bought it is 2". I assume I will need to locate shorter spokes...

Testing a Bendix Kickback 2-Speed Hub

Wow! Awesome information guys! Thanks Jeremy and Gary for your help. The description of what to look for and what to be aware of when testing was very clear and understandable. The YouTube video link brought it all home. The timing couldn't have been any better as I was able to use what you guys...

Testing a Bendix Kickback 2-Speed Hub

Rookie here needs some help! Is there a sure-fire way to test a Bendix Automatic 2-Speed (red or yellow band) "kickback" hub that is NOT laced to a rim? I see these at the local bike swaps occasionally but never know what to look for to confirm that they are actually operating properly. I had...

Let's see your bike in front of...

Wife and I cruised the '59 Strato-Chief and '75 Suburban to the Long Beach Pike for a car show. It's a monument to the old roller coaster that was there back in the day. Took this shot to honor the Cyclone Coaster vintage bike group who we ride with every month.

Need HELP to ID This "Mystery" AMF!

Thanks to everyone who has contributed answers so far. It's great to find out that my bike is a real-deal AMF model. You are correct that the top of the tank and the front forks have been repainted. Actually, the front fork is wrong for the frame as the neck is about an inch too short, which is...

Need HELP to ID This "Mystery" AMF!

Not sure this info will help, but it has a Perry (non-2 star) rear coaster hub.

Need HELP to ID This "Mystery" AMF!

I saw this "spacey" middleweight at the local monthly bike swap and just had to have it. I've been doing research on it ever since but there are so many unanswered questions as to what exactly it is. The "star" chain ring and the way the seat post clamps into the frame (like a gooseneck) seems...

    Left Coast Newb!

Playing around with the camera this past weekend and took this shot of my 2 rides of choice. Think I'll make this my avatar as well.

    Left Coast Newb!

Nice! I've been resisting the urge to yank the ice box/water tank unit and jump seat out to make more bike haulin' space! LOL! Thanks for the avatar help link. I'll give it a try tonight.
