Romet Tyler with Questions

Found this Romet "Tyler" in the trash today. Aired it up and it rides great. Has new Kenda 26" gum walls on it. They still have all the casting tips.

I'm wondering about the 3 speed. It is in 2nd which is great if it is frozen. It is a Shimano hub. The shifter and cable is gone.

Is there something missing the cable attaches to?

How do I hand shift it to see if it is worth trying to find a cable?

I have been looking for a diamond frame. I want to make a faux bamboo frame like Wildcat made. I don't guess this bike is of any value.

Cable emd will habe a threaded bsrrel ; that screw onto that..

That's what I figured. If I can't find one I could find a long coupling nut that thread and fix a cable to it. I'll need a shifter too.

That's a good candidate for a bamboo paint job, all straight tubes. New seat too, it must have been a fixup project that someone lost interest in.

Can you pull up on that shift bolt? It looks like it's in 3rd gear but hard to tell from the pic. If it won't move then it'll need to come off. There's a rod there in the axle that also will come out and everything will need looked at closely to decide where to go from there.

Whoever was working on it left out a serrated part of the seat clamp on each side and that made the seat impossible to set. I changed to a complete clamp and all was well.

The shift rod moved easily. The bell crank is binding. I really don't want all those cables for brakes or shifting. Tried a cruiser 26", coaster brake cruiser wheel set. Fit as long as I used 26x2 instead of 26x2.125. Also used a taller stem and wider bars. Much better. Now I will put it away until winter. High humidity until rainy season passes in October.

There is a slight clunk on left crank. I think it is in the BB. Hope these Romet BBs are standard.

I wondered about that. I can't wobble the crank by hand. The clunk always occurs when the left pedal is in line with the chain stay.

Maybe : crank arm bent inward a bit.

Got the drive train improved. 22T Sturmey Archer cog. Now I can pull what ever I slap on it short of a stone Moai.

The tolerances seem real close. The parts of the crank came apart easily.

I used heat and a scrapper to burn the graphics off.

Nice bike, classic high-end Romet design, and yet the welding, the simple brackets and some of the paint job are a bit (classically) iffy.

I have never seen a Tyler badged frame here, but I have seen them advertised, you would have had to buy it with foreign money at a special shop to get one here, or import it.

My usual problem is the BB, because they do not make them any more, but you have the 3-piece crank and BB instead of the usual 2-piece one, so replacing it with a modern one is viable without losing that classic Romet front sprocket.

Thanks. I checked the threads of the bottom bracket and a three piece BB from an Electra fits.
