The tank got its second coat today and now looking nice and smooth. They will most likely get painted tomorrow. I think I’m doing a lace paint job so I am starting with the same black as the bike. Then some copper tones to set it all off. Maybe I can get the fender in to primer tomorrow. I think the key to hitting these build off deadlines is to paint the bike as early as possible. We all have weather that hits at the worst time, making it hard to get paint down and happy with the results. I like my results so far. Getting cold and the weather is making it’s turn here in Colorado.

The fender has been fillled and primed. I noticed that I didn’t get the old fender attachments knocked down below the crown, so I will knock down some high spots and refill those areas. Some minor dents I initially missed have showed up also. Those will get touched up as well. The Bondo and the primer cure fast so I can get those things done quickly. Tanks sides will get their coats of black today. Everything will be painted pitch black until I start adding finishing touches to the paint.

Note for any rattle can painters out there. Some of you may not know, that on most or many spray paint cans, have a direction that the nozzle needs to point. Notice a dot on the inside rim of the spray nozzle? Your can needs to to line up with your caps outlet. There is typically a straw along the inside of the can, and the dot indicates where that is. If your spray is coming out strange, maybe not enough paint is coming out, or less sparkle or flake, the problem may be your cap alignment. And shake for at least 5 minutes. Seriously.

Serial plate dilemma
I decided to buy this serial# plate of the bay. It was for the same bike that Lamia is. “allegedly”. Lamia didn’t come with the plate. Any thoughts on whether I should or shouldn’t add the plate? I guess if it were to be registered, it would need the plate. @Wildcat have any thoughts? View attachment 282177View attachment 282178
Does the frame have two holes that line up? Then go for it. Those tags were put into use beginning in 1946, and with that low a serial number would be 1946 as the year. For registration you would have to say it's a 46, otherwise would need a new number stamped somewhere to be legal. Maybe it is a 46. No way to tell.
It doesn't match up to the numbers on my Monark list, they are much higher. Unless there is another digit after the 7 at the end. It would then be a 46 going by my saved Monark list.

I did not know that, thanks. 🙏

Lamia is looking great so far! Can't wait to see that killer lace effect when it's done!
Thank you @Bike from the Dead I am excited to get it done. I got the lace on one side of the tank and is ready to be sprayed. Now to get the other side to match will be the tough part. The fender got its second coat of black and will be ready to have the lace put down. The layout of the lace has made it tough to position it where I want. I think I like where I have it. The rose copper paint will be made up of 3 different paints. I will reveal those soon.

I went ahead and got the lace laid down on both tank sides. I think I did fairly well at getting them close to symmetrical. I also wrapped a piece of painted tin in lace for a test piece. The fender needs to cure till tomorrow evening and I will add the lace to it. Hopefully a full paint job by Sunday.

Great concept and execution (Halloween pun intended) of this build! I think I remember you using the lace technique previously? Maybe on another MBBO build?
I wonder if blacking out the crank, bars / other chrome parts might be cool.

How long do you have to wait before you remove the lace? When the paint is fully dried or when the paint is still 'flexible'?
I will most likely leave it on until dry. I don’t want to risk damaging the images during removal. It should only stick around the edges lightly. I am putting a few different coats on, so it most likely will stay on till dry. I will investigate that more before I shoot. When I tape off, I usually pull within an hour of laying down paint, leaving crisp edges and less chance of pulling paint up as you pull the tape. Maybe somewhere between “flexible” & dry.

I did in fact try some lace on the chain guard of my first build off bike. I only shot one coat and abandoned the idea and didn’t use the chain guard. This is really my first lace job that will be finished. I hope it turns out ok.
I like shiny. 🤩 so all the chrome will stay chrome. I do like the blackout idea though. Everything painted black right now and all seems dark and sinister, fitting Lamia well. My wife and I both don’t see this frame in any other color. It will be nice to be able to repaint the tank and fenders to give it a different vibe.

I figured out how to lay the lace down as I went. I decided to tape off the insides of the tank halves and hot glue the lace down to the tape. It allowed me to keep adjusting as I went and pull the lace taught where needed. It will also be easier to remove the lace without pulling paint from where I tacked it in place. After a few glue burns, it came out nice 😊

I got the third and final coat of black on Lamia. Then I hit the inside of the fender one more time. I have just a little bit of black left for any boo boo’s
Since I will be clear coating the fender and tank to set the lace paint in, I will clear the frame too. Hopefully by Sunday I can clear the frame and have the tank and fender lace painted.
