The other deciding factor is what actual classes do we really want?
Classic Big Build off
Muscle Bikes (can have subclasses as well)
Off Road (can have subclasses here too)
Skinny Tire
Step Thru
Unlimited Rat
Freakbikes?
Lowriders?
The list could go on....
On that subject. The analytics don’t lie. We can see that by far the current structure of the classic summer RRBBO is the largest draw. Then it’s very close between some iterations of the MBBO and the ORBO. Most others fall behind which is why we’ve tried other things. Skinny, step thru, etc. Keep it fresh in some aspects

The 2 class RRBBO, MBBO, and ORBO are probably not going anywhere. So how to we organize and structure them into a calendar year along with complimentary or contrasting classes

Classes we can come up with a million suggestions and we as the staff have had many discussions about just that. We have a great list and have even discussed how the rule sets would look for some in anticipation. Just need a format that works and can be successful

I could actually see a "Low Low" class (pedal scrapers, lowriders and burritos) running along side a couple classes of Muscle Bikes. I don't think we've ever really hosted a real lowrider event. They very often feature some of the most custom paint out there.

What would a rule set look like for that?

LOW LOW
How low can you go?
If you don't try, you'll never know.
Droppin' droppin, droppin it low
We got no rules, cuz it's all fo' show.

(to the music Slow and Low by the Beastie Boys)

Really never thought about rules...
No stock frame clearances, pedals must scrape when turning, and custom paint encouraged unless building a burrito where that is discouraged...

As a reminder of what the ORBO and SWBO consists of

ORBO - OFF ROAD BUILD OFF
  • -Klunker/Bomber/Gravel/MTB... (anywhere from period correct early single speed coaster brake Bomber/Klunker to current carbon frame, hydraulic disc, full suspension Mountain bike)
  • -BMX suitable for an adult to ride, can be set up for park/race/dirt/freestyle. Dealers choice
  • This is not a build-off for your everyday cruiser or your ride to the shops bikes... This is for bikes that are meant to be ridden hard and fast, jumped, skidded and abused in an OFF ROAD setting! Stock Cranbrook with knobbies? Probably not. Go nuts

SWBO - SKINNY WHEEL BUILD OFF
  • Tire (front and rear) width not to exceed 1.5" or 40mm
  • Anything else goes

* It is up to you to decide whether your plans meet parameters and definitions. The rules are intentionally thin to leave plenty of space for creativity

Competition will run from 12am (midnight) on 1/1/2025 (the start of the new year) until 12pm (noon) on 3/31/2025 (all times are North American Central Time)

Standard rules:

* You are expected to start a build thread in the “Build Journal” section showing your starting point and post progress pics as you go. You will be prompted to select which category (prefix) you are entering. All build journals will be in one sub forum to see if it helps with exposure and activity
  • Please don't just build away and expect to jump in at the last second with a finished bike. You can enter at any time before the deadline, but the build must not be finished when you enter!
  • This is a BUILD OFF not a BIKE SHOW. Start from scratch and show us your transformation skills
* Keep a running journal in your thread about your build showing the steps you are taking

* You must post a thread in the “Finished Bikes” sub forum once your work is complete. Use the same title as your build thread but please, no special characters or fonts. Please make the first photo in your finished thread your top choice as it will be the photo used in the voting process. This is on you to put your best foot forward and select the correct photo and place it first
If your builds rideability is questionable you may be asked to provide a riding video, just to quell that concern

* Multiple entries per class from one builder are allowed, but they must have their own build threads as well as their own finished threads and will be entered for voting separately
* The same bike cannot be entered in both categories even if it conforms to parameters. Pick one and build on

  • * Bike must be built within the dates specified. It must not be started before the start date
    • You can gather parts but no physical work should be occurring prior to the start time
  • * Bike must be pedal powered and ridable
  • * Any concerns of eligibility will be at the discretion of management

I don’t have strong opinions on it either. I just enjoy the builds. Personally, I need to plan to do projects that I can actually accomplish within the time frame, whatever it winds up being. I can do more time consuming or demanding builds in the build section.

I still like @GuitarlCarl ’s ideas for a burrito build and a shorter duration all out rats build. Those sound like a lot of fun.

I’ve got some interesting projects that I can do for both offroad and skinny so this next one should be fun!

Official 45 Day Shootout
hmm... Sounds kinda familiar. I like it.
Paint it later let's roll! The only extension you get is on your socket wrench... C'mon C'mon cut it in half already the welder is warmed up. Or day one tear down and then stare at it for 43 days. Day 45 wrench like it's money...
