    Rim painting/scratch prevention?

A bit of talc rubbed onto the bead of the tire will lubricate it a bit; making the ache of fingers/hands a little less...

Painting or refinishing steel crank and chainring

Found a slightly rusted one from an old Raleigh in my shop. I'm thinking of painting the chainring and the crank arms...though I am also wondering if the right process would render a good steel finish...(?) I'm thinking of a light wire wheeling; then a go-over with something finer to get a...

Sturmey "Sprinter" S5C 5 spd -Advice?

Gotcha. Going to do some ordering. Not a big fan of grip shifts; gonna go with a lever methinks: Levers can be braze-on mounted wherever one wants...and I have some ideas...

Sturmey "Sprinter" S5C 5 spd -Advice?

I was under the impression that the "Sprinter" 5-speed only needs a single 5 spd. indexed shifter to operate. At least that's what Sheldon is telling me: The assembly instructions were bang-on; so I'm assuming the rest is accurate... http://www.sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-arc ... nter5.html

Sturmey "Sprinter" S5C 5 spd -Advice?

Hmmmm....I am seeing that many of these hubs have a selector guide for the indicator chain as well as a fulcrum "arm" (instead of the chainstay "fulcrum clip") that bolts onto the axle (under the axle nut). Primarily I'm wondering if the selector guide is an important component; as the hub I...

Assimilating. Thanks guys. I'm was actually thinking of positioning the shifter on the seat tube for a novel approach; but may discard the idea for practical reasons...

Cool beans. I wasn't planning on being in the front of the peloton anyway. Time to get to work on it.

Sturmey "Sprinter" S5C 5 spd -Advice?

Yah Scrumble: This one is a little older and has no shifter (I just have the hub with the indicator chain). I'm actually hoping to rig a shifter on the frame. Another question is how much do these hubs depend on indexing? Can friction work?

Sturmey "Sprinter" S5C 5 spd -Advice?

Hey all: I had a buddy give me a wheel with one of these hubs in it (see title). It is a coaster brake/5 speed internal geared hub. I'm wondering if anyone out there has had experience with them: I'm considering using it in a build; but would have to string it into a 26" wheel (It's in a 700c...

    700/27" Aluminum Rims.

Hey everyone. i am in the process of rebuilding an old Raleigh "Ltd". Overall condition of primary parts (including frame) are good, but: It was missing the front wheel; and the rear is the original steel. I am going to replace the old steel rim, and front wheel with aluminum (Going to keep the...

    Rusty Frames

Yup. The primary thing to check is if the metal is rusting through. If it has then the frame needs more than paint... If it's just surface rust then a good "scuff and buff" + paint will keep it alive for a good long time.

    stickers off seats?

Okay. If it is "faux" leather, or real: Watch that adhesive. You can use a low setting on a heat gun to help; but be CAREFUL with the application of heat. Don't bake the thing  .

    stickers off seats?

Careful of the adhesives in the stickers. Some are nasty-sticky. If they can be peeled at all before using alchohol/goof-off whatever: get as much of the outer layer of the sticker off first. This will expose the adhesive to the solvent (alc. or goof-off) But be careful that the adhesive is not...

    How to clean whitewalls?

I have the BOMB: (Brand) Seapower part# SIBC16. This stuff is the be-all, and end-all imho. I didn't know about it until last year when a Customer asked me to get his grotty old Zodiac cleaned-up. Went to a local Marine Supplier; and was told to use this stuff. It works on better than anything...

Attack of the NooB: Parts sourcing questions.

Hey Everyone. I will cut to the chase: I am working on several Bike Projects right now; and need to "button-hole" the Gurus for information on where y'all source components. Eg. I am working on an old Miele 14 speed with Shimano 600 side-pulls: The rear brake's quick release lever has gone for a...
