    First ever bike build

First attach the chain to see if you need to make some room. If so, you can make sure the cog on the rear hub is concaved outward, that will give a little clearance. It looks that way already so there are other ways to get some spacing. Your chainwheel looks flat so it can't be flipped to get...

    ** The next build off 2024 **

I've got a skinny tire and a offroad bike in the works right now, like fraternal twins. Same frames but two different styles. They won't wait until January, so I'll just make two more for the buildoff. I'll be hunting frames until then.

The Violet One, and the Black One

The red brakes cables worked well and the seat clamp showed up so it's almost done, just needs a kickstand and a couple spacers.

    Paint challenge

I couldn't get the colors to blend together, the yellow-green was a totally different color so I made it two separate colors. After clear coat this morning it is about ready to put together.

The Violet One, and the Black One

Red and black are my high school team colors. The Perkins Pirates. I've already got the parts to make the other one violet and black. Not the same drivetrain, it's going to be 700c.

    Columbia Coyote

Also, the bike was probably just serviced at the shop there, so it's older than 1973.

    Columbia Coyote

My Columbia serial number list ends in 1972, but all of the Columbia numbers begin with a letter. I zoomed in on your pic and there's no letter before the 7. They also only have 6 numbers after the letter, for sequence probably. So yours is the 60,539th bike made that year. The 70 may be year...

The Violet One, and the Black One

More red things showed up and I see I need a few more spacers for the handlebar stem.

    Paint challenge

I'm starting on the yellow this morning. I realized I have gold paint so I'm going to paint the headset and cups to match the example I'm using.

    First ever bike build

If you need the seat a little lower to fit just right, you could cut the curved end off the stem which would allow the seat to go a couple inches lower. You may be able to adjust it backward and lower to sit closer to the frame. I think the handlebar stem may look better facing forward but...

    Paint challenge

The scraper worked better than sandpaper, so all morning was spent scraping all the paint off. I used the clothes hanging rack for the frame painting. The first coat is on and I'm doing it all in green first, then adding the yellow. I think that may give it a greenish tint to the yellow, but...

    Rat a tat tat

The patina is just right on the bike. The year can be deciphered from the serial number on the dropout. Columbia's numbers are small font and not stamped deeply so it may be hard to find. Late 56 and 57 would begin with a "C" number, 58 a "D".

The Violet One, and the Black One

The violet and red looked too much over the top for me, so now it's the black and red one. I swapped the parts over since it's the same frame, only different forks. I have a red headset and handlebars ordered. Maybe I'll get red cables also. The violet frame will be violet and black with 700c...

    Paint challenge

I have a few more green things and have the yellow tires gtg. Sanding down the frame is tough, I haven't got the motivation. Where are all the kids looking to work for a few bucks like we did as kids? A lawn mower and a snow shovel made a lot of bucks for me back in the day. All I get are the...

I've seen those and they look great but getting an even take on a bike frame is difficult unless you have a professional setup.

    "Too big a bearings!"

So what became of Eugene? Did he survive?
  19. Wildcat

    Paint challenge

I adjusted and lubed the bearings on the hubs and added a 16 tooth cog. With the 52 tooth crankset would make it 62 gear inches, about a normal one speed ratio. But the arms might be too long for ground clearance, so I may have to use the 44 tooth with shorter arms, making it easy to pedal at 52...

The Violet One, and the Black One

The seatpost and handlebars needed trimmed down. The curve in the seat tube wouldn't let the stem drop in far enough and the bars were way too wide. Then I checked and I have brakes that will reach the 26" rims, but no spindle for a front brake but tons of all the other parts. So I ordered a...
