They come up on Stl CL occassionally, and always in the $400 range in very good looking condition. That's not the price I would pay, but without fail, they're always gone from CL within just a couple of days so I'd say that's gotta be close to the market price around here.... but around here is...

I'm selling two nicely restored bikes, a '53 Phantom and a '39 Elgin to a local couple who will be taking them to their place in Scottsdale for the winter. The guy is handy and very capable but he's not a bike nut like we are, they just want some cool old bikes to tool around on in the local...

STL Craigslist has been a wasteland for a while... I don't think I've chased a CL bike since June maybe, there's just been nothing attractive in decent shape in the $25-$50-$75 range at ALLLL. Picked this up from a REALLY cool, nice guy this morning. Had to drive a little ways but I like a road...

Re: I finally got a Black Phantom BTW, in looking at the seat in your photo and a couple of others in-person for reference it looks like that seat leather might be getting a little dry. Don't want that thing to start getting flaky, any leather cleaner/ conditioner will do, just get it on there...

Lots of manufacturers (if not every) used drop center rims and well into the 50's. True, Schwinn switched over to their proprietary S-2 rim in the late 40's, but I have in my shop right now a 24" Wasp from '53 courtesy of the original owner that states the wheels on the bike were original...

The early S-2's didn't have the knurling around the rims. .... buuuuut I'm not sure how far back the S-2 rims went. The prewar Schwinns use a lot of regular drop-center rims.

^ THIS is a major issue, and one that a lot of guys here haven't considered thoroughly enough. Are you fixing bikes for other people and money is exchanging hands? Buying, improving, and then reselling bikes locally? Let's all be on the same page here, MANY people on RatRod fit into this...
