    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Thanks! With the wheels build, I'm impatient for the clearcoat to dry so I could get on with final sanding and finally putting stuff together. At this point, I have the wheels, the tires, the BB, the crank, and the headset. Still waiting on derailers and shifters, and still have to decide...

    TREK buys Electra

Around here, the only dealer that carries Electra is also a big Trek retailer. So, from that viewpoint, it won't change much. At least, not that I'll see. I'd like to see them still sell Electra stuff online, I've probably purchased 4 sets of wheels through their website.

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Moving along, with the hubs in hand, I measured the flanges and bought my spokes, and then proceeded to build up the wheels. I forgot to take a picture of the built wheels themselves. I'd also ordered a cassette, a Shimano CS-80 I think, which is technically a 9-spd MTB cassette, though I...

    New style of Fat Bikes

Funny that their site brags about their bikes but offers no information how to find one or buy one... o_O

    Can you tell any difference

I really don't use WD 40 for anything important anymore. Other options, like PB Blaster, are much more effective as a penetrating oil and I've had far better success with it. I do still use the WD during rust removal from chrome with steel wool and occasionally as light degreaser.

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

I probably could, but it would moot at this point. I eventually decided to pony up the clams for the matching (though pricy) VO rear hub. The 105 hub went into the hub bin for use later on. While I was at it, I also bought VO's sealed Grand Cru headset. Thanks! I thought so too. Just...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Well, that's the direction I was leaning too. I already had the 105 rear hub. But I ordered the VO high flange hub for the front. The trouble is that they don't match. Obviously, the flanges are different; that's less of an issue to me. The rear hub flanges are half hidden by the cassette...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Agreed. Now, this was a problem area - I was all set to buy white striping tape, and cut it and lay it on the frame. I've done that before, and with a bit of fussing to bring both sides of a scallop together, it can look OK. But I decided it would be really neat to also accent the edges of...

    Surly Pug Ops

Yeah, there's a throw rug that I'm running over, just as I'm braking to keep from hitting the wall...

    Surly Pug Ops

OK Luke, here you go. Not an easy thing to video solo, it turns out. I'm probably opening myself up to all sorts of abuse by posting these, but here... :D Hmm, I seem to be having some issues embedding them in the post. Here's a link...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

The next installment: trying to decide the second color. I brought home several different shades of green spray paint from the Depot. Since Rustoleum now makes all sorts of color choices, it seemed like a logical starting place. I'd also been paying attention to colors of auto paint, ie...

How many Girls Bikes do you have?

I've got two - a single speed Hollywood and a 3-speed Fair Lady. I keep the around as "house" bikes, should the need arise to have a female bike available...

Rare vs hard to find vs valuable

I guess ultimately, something is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay. When there is more than one interested party, that drives the price. But if no one is interested, well... We had this conversation years ago with a friend that's a car collector. He's got a '61 Lotus Se7en, a Jag...

Who is stoked for winter riding?

I'm on board. I just brought home a new Pug Ops last week: We had plenty of snow over the last few days, I expect I'll be out in it tomorrow...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

More regarding component selection - one of the reasons that I knocked the headset out (rather than mask it off) is that what Surly used from the factory was black. It was a decent enough headset, a Cane Creek 40 IIRC, but with the look I'm going for, I want everything to be bright work instead...

    Surly Pug Ops

Well, winter storm Hercules dropped 6 or 8 inches of snow after I posted initially, so I got to try the Pug in its intended environment. I rode around the parking lot at work in both plowed and unplowed areas, then at home around the yard and up and down the street. I'm impressed with how well...

Thanks for saying so. Trust me - when we get to the end of this story, it will be...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Well, the next step was to have the headset cups knocked out. Thanks to a friend at the LBS, that was easily accomplished. Then I spent some time removing the original decals so that I could scuff sand the finish. Since the decals were a couple years old, they didn't simply peel off. They'd...
