Ray's rebuild of late dad's '54 schwinn hornet

For the stuck seatpost, clamp the bike upside down in a vice (by the post of course). You can use the whole frame for leverage against it. If that doesn't work, shoot PB blaster down the seat tube and let it work a while, though the crank would have to be out for that. I've yet to lose a battle...

Firestone - Year, wrong parts and ????

Looks to have been assembled with pieces laying around the ol' barn. Frame is 50s HP Snyder, chainring is CWC, guard is universal, the rack struts are on upside down; they should match the bump of the truss rods, but those are early 50s CWC as well. I don't recognize the carrier, but the struts...

    40's Rollfast?

Yeah, you'll need photos for more information or parts help. But you have lucked out in that most serial numbers don't tell you anything without pictures.. yours does. It's a 1950 bicycle built by HP Snyder and sold through DP Harris hardware stores.

Picked this up today. Let's play I.D. this Elgin

Nice find, Tucker! That would indeed be a Murray built Elgin. This specimen would be of the 1938 vintage. '39 saw the tank extend beyond the seat tube, '40 saw the addition of a large curve in the seat tube. You don't see many of these first year short gothic tanks. Here's the most complete I...

I'll tell you my guess, you help me fill in the gaps?

The Whizzer kit was only ever sold as a factory option on Schwinns and Roadmasters (to the best of my knowledge). Then there was a Whizzer Pacemaker. The engine kits were primarily aftermarket add-ons, so no factory Elgins. The first Whizzer engines were manufactured in 1939 (same year as this...

No guard then and the Delta Winner should be a frontloader Torpedo. Both corrected now (thank goodness nobody got hurt!).

I'll tell you my guess, you help me fill in the gaps?

Nice bikes; it's either a 1938 or 1939 built frame. Here's my '39 deluxe before it was 100%:

    Schwinn Serial Number Tid-Bit

Interesting! I knew about the prewar 'I' code, but never have seen a postwar example. It makes perfect sense, though. I have an 'I' coded '41 New World.

came up on an old schwinn today

Anything '63 Stingray is $$$ even if it's a mess. This falls into that category, but definitely remains a worthy project. Original parts look to be frame, hard to tell on the wheels, crank, fender (because deluxe means it had fenders). Handlebars don't look quite right, but it may be the angle...

Can someone help me figure out this model of J.C. Higgins

I'm betting this is a late bike, circa 1956-57. The forks are late, and the tank is slightly different than the early style. It looks to be a middleweight; lights were added. I don't know a model name for you. Luxlow has this same bike he's calling a '56. A picture of the serial number on the BB...

    Tan Schwinn deluxe seat

Nice! Sold as accessory heavy duty seats but original for some years Cycle truck, Wasp and the 1959 Phantom. Worth a few bucks too since they're pretty sweet.

Some ones fathers old pre war Moto bike ..

You're right, every old bike is a Schwinn to those not in the know. But even a broken watch is right twice a day and I'm leaning in that direction. As far as the bearing cage goes, they were relatively standardized. There are a couple different sizes through the years, though. Prewar ballooners...

Ooh, I like that! That way, if it turns up in Boston, they have the station to contact for the records and an ID number.

Some ones fathers old pre war Moto bike ..

Alright, I'm not the best with motobike era IDs, but nobody has chimed in. How about mid-late 20s Schwinn-built Excelsior? I've seen that color scheme on Schwinn products of the 20s, then there's the wide square badge ghost a-la the square Excelsior badge. Forks look Schwinn-ish as well. To...

    Blue Schwinn, what year?

Yeah, 1950 jives. Model will be more difficult to say with any certainty, since it's been repainted and could have had parts swapped at any time. BUT, judging by the parts that are on it, I'd guess a first year Starlet. They came equipped with painted fenders w/ front duck tail, rocket ray...
