What the heck are they called?????

No it is not a parking brake it is a Tire Saver. These are meant to be mounted on nutted caliper brakes. One on the rear and one on the front. Both facing forward, The rear between the brake bridge and the seat tube and the front under the fork crown. Yes they did work well but the tires need to...

Sure; It is called FEA (Finite Element Analysis). This is software that runs off of the 3D solid CAD models. You can run this as a static or dynamic test. The requirements are : an engineering workstation (computer), high end CAD program, FEA program, and it helps to have at least a BS in...

    Question about black plating type

I remember these. This was the so called "heat treated" parts. Flat black finish on a steel substrate. Really the black finish had nothing to do with the the heat treating process. I think the parts used an automotive high temperature paint finish.

internal geared hub/ drum brake question

Re: internal geared hub question And a lot more than $70 by the time you have the wheel built. Parts and labor cost money. Start looking for a used wheel but make sure you get all the shifter, cables, small parts, etc with it or you will not save much.

Ever seen a BB cup do this before?

Seen it hundreds of times. Basically it is loose and abuse. Remember these cups are low end parts made from pressed sheet metal then hardened. A thousand years ago when I worked with the Diamond Back Team I would occasionally install pre-war Schwinn cups on team bikes. These are machined from...

TIG welding vs Silver Solder...input please?

Silver solder on aluminum? Silver is meant for steel (excepting electrical or jewelry work). Generally used on lugged frames and used to wick into thin gaps. Even when tig welding aluminum frames/forks other than 7005 the piece will still need to be re-heat treated.

    rear forks are bent, Help?

No heat, bend it cold. Use blocks of wood to support the stays on either side of the bends, use another block of wood and a mallet to drive the bend back. This is an easy job and the frame material is soft.

Can you explain the Fixie craze?

My single. Not a fixed anymore but a single freewheel with two brakes. This is one of my old track bikes. I probably won close to a hundred races on this bike before retiring it to the road.
