26 MTB to gravel bike conversion to town bike

Yeah for now. If I like this bike, I may down the line build up some tubeless wheels using Alex Adventure 2 rims and try out some Surly ETs in 26x2.5.

26 MTB to gravel bike conversion to town bike

Making progress. Just need to get to the bike shop and get chain ring bolts, v-brake boss bolts, the little metal tube the cable runs thru at the brake and apparently the right size seatpost or see if they have shims. I thought I measure it at 26.0 and that is what I saw online but it isnt...

There are also some threadless choices if the steerer is cut short. https://velo-orange.com/collections/stems/products/cigne-stem

You just need more rise on the stem or more spacers to get the bars up higher. IMO there is no reason dropbars can't be as comfortable as flat bars. It is just most of the time the bars are set low because of road racing.

Finally got the bottom bracket sorted. So should be able to build it next week. I have all the parts in I think. Sent from my LG-H910 using Tapatalk

    Surly Bicycles

I bought my wife a pink 1x1 (I think it 03-04). Added a basket and Velo Orange Tourist bars. Will post a picture later. I want to find a V2 1x1 for myself in the near future. Sorry for the crap photo the camera lens is broken on my phone

Need suggestions for forks for this radical 26" BMX frame!

Oh I forgot about that... S&M does do custom forks. I wonder if they would do a custom thread 26" fork.

    I'd run S&M Pitchforks.

Matti goes shopping. New bike phobia

Or there is the 1x1. I found one for my wife for $300. Hers has rim brakes (but it is late enough to also have disc brake mounts), Chris King headset and Richey seatpost. Can handle 26, 26+, 27.5 (even large sizes like 2.6) and I have seen some with small 29in tires. I have also seen them with...

Keep an eye out for a Kona Unit or Surly Karate Monkey. I have frequently seen them for around $500-800 USD sometimes even less for an early KM (I saw one of the FB Surly sale group not long ago for $350). Those may be great for you and will last forever.

Yup. I am not sure about polishing or not. It probably wouldn't stay shiny in the long term and it is a lot of extra work.

Make it all shiny and stuff.

Lol. Yeah is just a comparison of how I got them to where I am going. I hadn't touched the right one yet.

Sanded one crank down. Now do I leave in the sanded state or polish it? Sent from my LG-H910 using Tapatalk

Fair enough but it might be worth trying to find a demo day for say Kona. You might enjoy a Honzo (or a 27.5 Explosif very similar geo) and I occasionally see older ones for not a ton of money. It is one of the more flickable bikes I have ridden (short of a 20in BMX or 26in dirt jumper) due to...

Matti goes shopping. New bike phobia

My second hand Niner WFO9 (aluminum frame) cracked at the welds around the BB. But it was ridden hard and put away wet. I threw the parts on the steel hardtail frame. What kind of riding do you like to do? A lot of fast rocky downhills or more mild XC trails? I am guessing you aren't looking...

IMO steel is the way to go for a hardtail or rigid. Aluminum generally is somewhat harsh and also seems more likely to break (given what I have seen).
