Rant: why I have trouble supporting the LBS

Maybe it’s because I am middle-aged, but I really want to support the LBS. However- there are a few wrinkles. 1) cool shop, been around forever, open 3 or 4 days per week, weird hours. 2) bigger shop, better hours, lots of employees, likes selling bikes more than parts. The absolute worst...

    Chubby's bikes

I knew a guy who bought failing businesses. 3/4 didn’t make it, but he always got enough out of it to break even, if not profit. A lot of times it was selling the inventory, but occasionally, he saw one worth saving. There can be many motivations for why one buys a failing business. It is a...

    Chubby's bikes

There is that aspect, as well. One thing I remember some retail agreements having was the ability of a supplier or manufacturer to take some or ALL of a retailer’s inventory to pay a debt off, including products they did not provide! Essentially, some retail agreements allowed a bike...

    Chubby's bikes

Customer database is hard to come by and sometimes it’s a good gamble to buy a struggling business and resurrect it. Usually, it’s at pennies on the dollar, particularly with some inventory on hand.

    So, who knows disc brakes?

I may find on this bike that mechanical is definitely lacking. I have never moved anything with tyres this large. I found it very strange that these wheels only had disc mounts on the rear hub; then again- the model of bike this wheel set was on now is upgraded to discs front and rear. How much...

    So, who knows disc brakes?

Sad as it sounds, I went with a take-off caliper (essentially NOS) mechanical. I didn’t want to add anymore complications to this bike. I already wasn’t happy that I ended up with a suspension fork that will likely be locked. Upon further investigation, it may be easier than some rim brakes to...

    So, who knows disc brakes?

This caliper is labelled as “180mm F/ 160mm R”, so I can likely install with minimal fuss!

    Cruiser

That is just a cool frame! No need to find the brand name, just build that beautiful thing out!!!!!

Who has made a 1 1/8” steer tube fork work in a 1” head tube?

As soon as I finish my monster bike, I will see what I can cobble together. I am almost thinking of going another direction with my triple fork that the head tube wouldn’t need modification (but there will be plenty of other mods).

    So, who knows disc brakes?

It seems one mechanic tends to Tim Allen his stuff to the gills whilst the other is slightly more sensible. ;)

    So, who knows disc brakes?

The red anodised centre was what tripped my trigger. One shoppe employee tried to tell me I needed a bigger disc than was spec’d and another from the same shoppe told me that there was no way I needed bigger than 160mm (what was spec’d on the bike), especially since the bike won’t be doing...

    So, who knows disc brakes?

I ended up buying a floating Hope disc (from my home country) as I don’t think I will have clearance problems as there is a LOT of room back there. Hopefully I don’t need an adapter. I looked at the Shimano units and what I saw were mostly centre lock and I need six bolt. I probably wasn’t...

    So, who knows disc brakes?

I haven’t set up disc brakes, ever. Since this is a totally new build, I am going by what was spec’d on this frame, which is a 160mm disc. Do I just install the caliper, get a disc and see what needs to happen? Also, any brand recommendations or types of discs to buy? I am running a Tektro...

    New project: Gossamer the Bike!

I had to order a shim and a new, cheapo seat clamp :( Nothing on this bike is standard or easy to get! I have a nice Basset clamp for a 27.2 mm seat post. May just put it on my Ripper.

    Huffy Olympia pursuit.

I do not remember those. Even the cheap copy is probably worth something! I know that Eddy Merckx (probably spelled wrong) made some of the “Huffy” road bikes back in the day, though that predates Eddy getting into building bikes,
