For those who were interested, the Elgin has been sold.

    Yesterday turned out well

To hopefully avoid any confusion or hard feelings, the Elgin is being offered for sale to individuals in the order of their expressed interest. This has been compounded by the fact that I posted the bike on two sites. If I have contacted you, you know where you are in line. If I haven't...

    Antique Bottle Question Please Help

I agree, they shouldn't have a problem with an empty bottle, but with ebay you never know. A few years ago I bought a gun part at an estate sale. I wasn't even sure what it was and then I found exactly the same part on ebay. So I listed mine with the same description and ebay canceled my auction...

    Brass or steel wire wheel?

Brass is better. And wear eye protection!! Having the doc take brass wire out of your eye is no fun. Don't ask me how I know.

    1953 Hawthorne Tank Bike Project

Yes, we were to the right as you walked in. My chunky friend had a bunch of head badges, and I had a bunch of parts and a couple dozen bikes.

    1953 Hawthorne Tank Bike Project

The bike is looking good. The fork and chain ring I sold you look like they turned out okay. Did you attend the bike swap in Andover last Sunday? I was set up there.

    I need Schwinn 20" s2 info

I am not well schooled on the Stingrays, but I do know they had an S2 in the rear and an S7 up front. There was a 36 spoke 20 inch S2 on the Scrambler model I think, but not on the Stingray.

    New Departure Hub

I agree with the others, it should be nice and smooth. It is always recommended to replace the transfer spring when the hub is disassembled for servicing. I have the springs, so if you need one, pm me your US postal address and I'll see that you receive a spring.

new to old bikes find #2

Okay, I found the part you need for your rear hub. If you would pm me your postal address I will get it shipped pdq. We don't want that little girl to have to wait too long to ride that bike.

Any one know what this is?

I think that Monarkofsocal nailed it. The other frames mentioned usually (if not always) had a bent frame tube from the fork to the crank, not straight like the one in question.

I am 99% sure I have replacement parts for the Centrix hubs. I'll check my parts tomorrow and let you know.

    Schwinn 2 speed kickback hubs

Easy to make your own 2 prong tool from a short piece of 3/8 inch black pipe. Use a dremel or a hack saw to cut out between the prongs. If you use a piece of pipe that is threaded on one end you can screw on an elbow or a tee and add pipe for a handle.

86? Schwinn world sport, should I pull the trigger

I don't recall exactly, it was awhile back. Doesn't seem like it was exceptionally light.

86? Schwinn world sport, should I pull the trigger

I had the same bike, even the same color with a nice saddle. The whole bike was mint as it had been a training bike for a long distance runner. After numerous attempts at selling it I finally got $25 for it. Where you are there may be more demand for them.

    Another Rustbucket !

From looking at the catalog reprint pages, Sears started importing 3 speeds in 1953 and were still doing so in 1965, and it looks like there were models with the JC Higgins cut out chain ring available each year. The bikes depicted are artist renditions, so I'm not sure how accurate they are...
