Another Junky Old Dept. Store Bike Rescued!

I hear you. My "good" bikes are locked up and secure. These wall hangers are mostly just for parts, and wouldn't cause much heartburn if they disappeared. Even though they are outside, they are out of sight, and therefore out of mind to casual observers and passersby. We don't have a huge...

Who throws away a GF? Insane how wasteful folks are. Good thing for us though, eh?

What do you have in the works?

I want to get the Quintana Roo back to its former glory and gift it to my son. No repaint 'cuz that would be improper and imprudent. NOS crankset parts coming from Italy. I want to get my Specialized Team StumpJumper restored to near original condition with a few personalized touches. Forks...

Another Junky Old Dept. Store Bike Rescued!

Yes, I saw that. This bike won't be doing any sweet jumps, so I think these Fookers are more than adequate.

Another Junky Old Dept. Store Bike Rescued!

Build complete! Just under $156 in parts and paint. New Goodyear tubes, Bell tires, Husky rear coaster brake wheel, Oury grips, Fooker pedals (and adapters). Everything else was reused or recycled from other rigs. The Fooker pedals seem really nice and make the bike pop, I think. I don't care...

    Virtue Ortho

Thanks. I looked it up (like I should have done in the first place)! :wink1: Interesting company with cool retro (conventional) designs. Prices seem reasonable. I assume they're Chinesium-made? I have to admit the ortho isn't aesthetically pleasing to my eye, but proof is in the puddin'...

What In Tarnation Did I Just Bring Home? Some Kinda Rig I Wouldn't Understand Rescued From The Trash Man!

Thanks for your help and guidance. I truly appreciate it. I know my way around antiques and simple department store junk pretty well, but with the more modern or higher grade tech stuff I'm sorta lost. That is why I am so delighted with this community. You and folks like you are more than...

What In Tarnation Did I Just Bring Home? Some Kinda Rig I Wouldn't Understand Rescued From The Trash Man!

Thanks. Dumb question inbound. How are cranks measured? Center of pedal hole to center of bottom bracket axel? I see measurements of 170mm and 175mm on the links you provided. Mine measure approx 175mm from center to center of both holes. Is the 1725 maybe the crank size...172.5mm?

What In Tarnation Did I Just Bring Home? Some Kinda Rig I Wouldn't Understand Rescued From The Trash Man!

So, I'm kinda wrapping things up for the year and closing up shop because winter's coming and I have to do most of my bike work and painting outside. But, I can't leave well enough alone, so I take a closer look at this thing and try to figure out what exactly is wrong with the drive side crank...

The same bike...all done and purtyfied, except for the groovy orange Fooker pedals on order. I plan to give this to my new daughter-in-law.

Makes sense. I’d forgotten that. Still, you think it’s possible this bike was used in the event? The sticker looks official and it’s numbered, and there is this other iron man sticker as well.

What In Tarnation Did I Just Bring Home? Some Kinda Rig I Wouldn't Understand Rescued From The Trash Man!

Yeah. The bike is apparently a 2003 model. The Iron Man decal is dated 2006, which leads me to believe it was put on there just to be cool. I have a hard time believing a 2003 model bike was used in a professional 2006 championship event, seeing as most of these athletes have corporate...

What In Tarnation Did I Just Bring Home? Some Kinda Rig I Wouldn't Understand Rescued From The Trash Man!

Thanks for all your help and info. After some thought, I think I’m gonna give it to #2 son. He’s getting into some serious road cycling/touring, and this rig would be perfect for that. It’s really not my style, and I’m a hack bike mechanic. I’m more of a clunker, beach cruiser guy. I don’t wanna...
