    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

With most of the bits on hand I turned my attention to the frame. The frame was a little out of true so I had to use Sheldon Brown's long 2X4 technique to even things up. This is gauged using a string wrapped around the bike through the dropouts and around the head tube, you then measure from...

    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

The seatpost was a source of some frustration. The old frame uses a rather small post that isn't in common use, and none of my choices was available in this diameter. I had thought about reaming the frame sightly with a brake hone and turning a seatpost down slightly on my lathe but in the end I...

    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

With the front wheel sorted out I turned my attention to the rear wheel. I decided against the Sturmey Archer 2 speed kick back hub, and I didn't want a cable to shift a 3 speed Sturmey Archer so I went with the SRAM 2 speed Automatix which shifts automatically. Reports show it is far more...

    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

No, I've been so busy that a move has been pushed a couple of years down the road. Partially due to earning good coin right now I want to save a few hundred thousand $$$$ before the move. I also have an immense amount of stuff I have accumulated over the years that simply won't all fit in a...

Simplistic Speed, 100% done, pics posted! **Lightweight**

Re: Simplistic Speed, Let there be lights! **Lightweight Build** Very nicely done. I like the fact that you had an idea in mind and have gathered the pieces to make a commendable version. This is one of the more interesting builds I have seen.

    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

Whilst I was waiting on the next bits to arrive I decided to clean up the headbadge. A simple soak in lemon juice and salt cleaned it up nicely and a quick rub with brass wool and a cloth brought out the luster. Once done I sprayed it with laquer front and back.

    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

I decided I liked the look of the Sturmey Archer X-FD drum brake and how it looks on bikes like the Pashley Guvnor. I also read up on it and it has very good reviews and good braking. For the build I decided to use Velo Orange Raid rims, these are a double wall box rim in polished aluminium...

    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

Next up was a crankset and pedals. I had thought about going retro here but the choices were bewildering to someone unfamiliar with all the tapers and other choices. So I narrowed it down to about 3 current models finally settling on a IRD Defiant crankset because I wanted a 165mm length arm...

    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

My idea is to build the bicycle using modern but retro components of good quality and with a mind to building a sort of city bike. So I began buying components when I could find good prices. My first purchase was a Brooks B17 Select, this one is made from organic Scandinavian leather and is...

    Old Wearwell Cycle Co. build

I have been looking for an old lugged steel frame in a small size for over a year and finally came across a bike on Craigslist advertised as a 1954 Wearwell Tour Of Britain. I drove a couple of hours to look at the bike and even though it was rougher than I expected I made the purchase for $110...

    Leather saddle pictures

I have a Brooks B67 on my cruiser in honey. I have just purchased a Brooks B17 select for a build of an old lugged English frame that I am currently working on. The select uses extra thick organic leather so will probably be broken in when I am 90! It also has the hand hammered large...

show your bikes with license plates

I just picked up a nifty vintage bicycle license plate with vintage jeweled reflector. Mounted it low like a bobber motorcycle. It gets a lot of interest when I am out riding my bike. Show me what you've got.

How do ya feel about this cheap welder?

I have the same welder and get good welds from it. Not as good as my Hobart and gas but certainly good penetration within its limits. Try different wire.

"Red Rodster" - Never Done - New Pics 4/14

Re: "Red Rodster" - 99% Done - New Pics 2/10 Nicely done. What is the rear light you are using? I finally found my frame, an old Wearwell from England and am gathering together parts. I already have the same front drum and hub you are using on the way. I also have an IRD Defiant track crank...

interesting take on board tracker from France

It is just a poor translation from French to English. If you read the French site it will make more sense.

interesting take on board tracker from France

Stumbled across this whilst researching the SRAM 2 speed Automatix hub for a build I am doing. Thought they were interesting, like if Salvador Dali was into bike design. Particularly like the idea of the leather bag to replace a tank. http://www.cycleabikes.com/en-uk/index.html

    Bicycle Photography

I like it, very nicely done with a nice background. The rust stain is nice too. The only tip that would make the shot even nicer is to not centre the bike in the frame. Generally we humans find it more pleasing to the eye when there is more empty space in the direction in front of an object or...

"Dead Sled" '49 Mercury model by Redd

Smaller aperture, higher f number equals more depth of field. Very important in closeup photography. Most point and shoot cameras with their small sensors have a lot of depth of field without trying, but as the camera sensor or negative size increases so does the issue with controlling depth of...
