Re: 1920s CADILLAC who made this one? I think that's a Davis (sewing machine co) bike that were badged as Elgin and Harley Davidson. The frame shape looks the same as my (your old) Elgin and that is what that one is. That's awesome. I think Cadilac was a Shelby badge back then and I think...

Try some Xymol on the paint and see what is under it.

I paid $250 for that frame a few years ago, granted it had original paint, but, yeah, that was just the frame. That's a Model C Schwinn frame, and fork, and truss rods....wow.

I still keep the radar out for a coppertone Typhoon. I want to build my own version of this bike someday to add to my own fleet. That one and Hooch's LaSalle - I have the wheels from it waiting anxiously to go on the next DX frame I come across. Both of these bikes were what really bit me...

Yeah, I can make out "SCHWINN" on the downtube. Barely.

I would use the powder. Either one will work. The key is the toothbrush. You can use just about any abrasive cleaner, but ones with bleach might not be a good idea. Baking soda would probably even work as long as you washed it off afterwards.

Bar Keeper's Friend, a little water and a toothbrush does the trick.

Got these from my grandfather in-law - trying to decide whether or not to put them 'round the tree this year or sell. Anybody know if any of these are worth anything? I saw the blue locomotive and tender sold for $46 on ebay recently.

Good grief, those are a lot of expensive parts. Hard enough when you need one, much less, two! That is one amazing bike though.

I got this frame and fork around 2006, when I got into old bikes and piece by piece have got more parts from a buddy (that I got the frame from). He cannibalized most of it to build a boy's Colson years ago, never had the tank - but being my favorite bikes, I have hung on to it and have tried...

Those are SOOOO hard to find with nice red paint. Usually that shade has bleached to a magenta-y pink very un-masculine shade. I saw a red frame and fork go for $137 a while back on ebay, didn't have as nice paint as this.

Zud or some other abrasive cleaner and an SOS pad. Wet sanding would probably do wonders too. After that, try rubbing compound and play around with rags/toothbrush.
