So for a quick update...I've been trying to knock out some work before school starts back up. I keep running into issues with the saddlebags. I grossly under-calculated the amount of thread that I would need. Each of the long seams needs 18ft of thread! So need to make another trip to Tandy...

The seat looks pretty clean from the pic...well done. The front part can be tricky since its such a tight turn. You have to cut out some triangles to get the cover to lay right and then get them to line up when you wrap it or you can just fold them if the cover is thin enough. I cut out some...

Franco Thanks for the kind words!! I have tried using the faux leather before and find it to be more difficult to work with than plain ol veg-tanned leather. The cutting and stretching takes some practice to get the hang of. No matter how many things I cover with leather I always have a...

Indyjps Thanks for the advise! Its hard to tell in the pics but the handlebars are pretty rough. I put them in a rubbermade bin with the other chrome and some nuts and bolts and rattled it around for a bit then took some 120 grit sandpaper to them. That got them scratched up and took off the...

    Hellbent for Leather

So been working on saddlebags but today I decided I had to see what the bike was looking like so far so I threw it back together somewhat and took a few pics. In my excitement I did not care that it was night and the pics aren't that stellar but I'm happy with the direction its going. The seat...

The difference in steering is hard to explain. Small movements are more pronounced than before and if I am moving slowly its more difficult to maneuver. The biggest difference for me was that when turning I have to keep the inside pedal up or it will scrape the pavement. Also I have scraped...

Good call...I didn't think about aging from use I just went with anything horizontal should be rusty and the sides should still have a little paint. Will be something to consider on the next one. I have a heat gun so will put that to the chrome...have some muriatic acid too i might have to do...

Anyone know a trick for rusting/aging chrome? Handlebars and some other parts are gonna need it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk

Got the paint done....now to throw it inthe attic for a week or so. Wanted a rusty finish with some paint still hanging on so did red then multicolor texture brown then dark satin brown. Sanded til I had some red showing up. First attempt at this and while I'm not 100% satisfied with it I...

Finished up sewing. Ended up a little twisted so soaked and stretched again. Pretty happy with the stitching though...it was difficult accounting for the curves so ended up with some extra holes that i'm gonna have to find a solution for.

Cool!! Let me know if I can help out. I'm not really confident in my bike building abilities yet but I've been doing leather work for a while and can maybe answer a question or two if needed. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk

Got some primer sprayed then started on the seat recovering. First I've ever done so I'm kinda making it up as I go along. Trimmed up the padding (it was thick and blocky) then formed it with some sandpaper. Got the leather cut and soaked and stretched on the seat last night. After drying I...

    Hellbent for Leather

This is my second attempt at a bike. I wanted to get deeper into bike building but since I cannot weld I decided to play to my strengths and do some leather pieces for this one. I started off with a Bud Light Lime promotional bike I found on CL for cheap. I have stripped the paint and will be...

Thanks. The bent forks took awhile to get used to but after a month or so its just as comfortable and easy to ride as ever. The banana seat is fantastic comfort-wise...i have no idea why they stopped putting those on bikes and why they weren't a fixture on adult bikes. I love the riding...

    First custom bike

So my grandfather had a bicycle (90's Openroad Beach Cruiser) but he did not like the seat so he replaced it with the seat from my grandmothers old exercise bike. It was a thick cushiony beast. He got sick and gave me his bike. I set out to find a replacement seat since i didnt care much for...

Hello from a (former) lurker in Dallas!

Hey. What started off as me trying to find a replacement seat for the bicycle my grandfather gave me turned into something quite different. Through the entire process I lurked around here and found lots of inspiration and ideas. I decided to register in order to buy a seat post from...
