A new build from a noob builder (cruiser content & questions)...

So, here we are... I still need to calculate my spoke lengths, front & back. Plus I'll need a chain guard, some little reflectors for the pedals & some lights. It's definitely starting to look like a bike now. Ha!!

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

Hey, thanks for the offer. I'll stick with the rims I bought while I put the bike together but might change my mind down the line.

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

No worries. Yeah, there's a link to a spoke calculator in one of my threads. Once I have all parts in hand I'll work it out. Cheers.

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

They look great!! That's a very nice bike you've got there. I'm curious...what's the diameter of the discs on the hub that hold the spokes (I don't know the technical name) & what are the length of the back spokes? I've paid for the other rims now but I may still consider the retro versions...

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

A pair of rims have come up that are perfect. The place I've ordered most of my parts from can get hold of them for me & I even have a voucher to use which will make them really cheap. Result!!... Outer width : 46mm Inner width : 39mm 36 holes Double wall 945g Matt black

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

Thanks for this! Really useful information. The 32mm measurement of the double wall rims is outer, not inner. I can't actually find the inner width but I think it's too narrow regardless. I've found another build on here using the wider, single wall rims with 26x2.4 tires & I reckon I'm gonna...

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

OK, that's good to know. Do you reckon it'd make more sense to put a 2.3" tire on this, or would a slightly narrower double wall rim (32mm) still be OK? I get the idea of tire roll being an issue on narrower rims but am also thinking about durability in the longterm.

    49 Higgins - Westfield/Columbia built

I had grips identical to those on the right on my current bike, except mine were brown. They were on for less than a week before I decided on a change but I ended up having to cut them off!! They literally fused themselves to my handlebars. I love all these old bikes people are restoring. I...

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

Darn it! Not compatible with disc brakes......sigh.... Or is it? It states : Brake type - drum brake.

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

I've been searching high & low for 26" rims that are around 40mm wide. It's not easy finding anything in the EU at the moment. The extra wide (57mm+) ones look a bit too chunky for my liking but I still want a fairly fat tire (around 2.5 - 3.0") I did see these though... RYDE Aluminium Rim "V...

PART ORDERED!! 3G Newport Frame Handlebars Stem Forks Seatpost Bottom bracket Crank set + pedals 7-speed internal hub + twist shift Chain As I'm not 100% sure about the 57mm rim I'm going to buy the 32mm one & take things from there. I've given up finding something inbetween. All the 40mm...

A new build from a noob builder (cruiser content & questions)...

I think today's the day I pull the trigger on everything. The couple who run the online store that hold the bulk of my order are sick & won't be working on much over the next few weeks. Although this was frustrating news at first, now that I've watch the "No BS..." video & seen the other links...

A new build from a noob builder (cruiser content & questions)...

Off on a tangent but 2 pretty alarming things have happened over the last 36 hours. Firstly, 2 bikes were stolen from the back of our apartment block. It's dark & private but not secure at all. Anyone can walk around the back & snoop around & at the moment the security light isn't working. Not...

Keeping on the subject of rims... can people list suppliers in the EU? I've found plenty via Google but odd sizes, particularly 26" with wider sizes, has been hard to find.

Hey Wildcat. Thanks for posting those pictures, it's great to get a visual impression of what different rims look like with the tire width I'm probably going with. I love the overall look of your yellow cruiser & those last brown walls look perfect on that particular frame. Very cool, although...

A new build from a noob builder (cruiser content & questions)...

OK, I'm getting a bit giddy now. The folk at Ruhrpottcycles will build my back wheel for an extra 40€ (most likely what the guys down the road would charge...at least). I'll choose a standard sized rim & they'll fit a Nexus 7 Hub (SG-C3001). I'm pretty sure there's a disc brakes friendly...

A new build from a noob builder (cruiser content & questions)...

Hey, thanks! I've forgetten the name of the brand. I pulled all the decals off when I picked it up because they looked a bit naff. I think it was some regular bike manufacturers attempt at making a kind of off-road/BMX/cruiser hybrid. It's definitely lacking the finesse of an Electra or a...

I think now would be a good time to ask for recommendations of parts suppliers. So far I know... cruisershop.eu customcruisers.nl ruhrpottcycles.de amazon.de (for more generic parts) Finding somewhere that sells a wide rimmed 26" wheel set including a 7-8 speed cassette would be amazing.

Thanks. Another question... I'm looking at getting 26 x 3.0 tyres. Is there a specific sized wheel/rim I'd need or will they fit on a standard wheel? I've seen a chart that seems to suggest they'll fit on a few different width rims but all the pictures look like they're on wider ones.
