Once this years competition is finished I can see a market for "instruction set and materials disguise kit to make your high value bike less likely to be stolen".

So many great examples of real rust, patina and artificial matching it as well. The average bike thief looking for shiny targets has no idea how many great bikes at rat rod are no where as old or rickety as they may seem at first glance.

Glad to see you are acheiving your targets in balancing rusty with black on this bike.

The problem with the anti-theft aspect of what we do with our rat rod bikes, is we usually also add cool parts to the bike that still draw the attention of devious eyes. As I have ridden starsNbars through downtown, I saw lust in the eyes of some of the homeless bike guys in the park.

Great detail work as usual!

I've been out of town for a few days and I am really looking forward to getting back into the finish details.

Worked on a few items tonight.
First I put some spray adhesive on the back of the Cheerio 1976 Don't Tread On Me stickers, applied them to the chain stays, then I torched them some (thanks @Double Nickle ) and walnut stained them. I still might hit them with some more stain.

Then I pulled out the shifter case and planned to coat it with more textured rust paint. Sunday, I did a light over coat of the brown rust to cover the starsNbars black. I like the way it muted and aged the whole pattern and think I am going to leave it as is now. It's more like the ghost of the pattern now. Gotta love when cool things happen by accident.

This Don't Tread On Me Coin is going to fill the whole where the shift indicator was. I haven't worked on how to age this yet.

You may remember I did some test striping using masking tape. I was not only testing the striping pattern, but also testing my idea of using actual masking tape as my striping material. I liked the results and I am sticking with that technique. The color is perfect, but I'll add some aging to it, then I plan to coat the whole frame with boiled linseed oil.

Here is the pattern for the twin down tubes. I still need to trim it up. This is the topside of the downtubes. I am going to run one stripe on top, one spaced towards the inner gap then repeat on the underside of each tube. The striping is 3/8" wide. I'll cut some more stripes tomorrow and continue. I'll repeat this pattern on the twin top tubes.

I wanted to put my RRB Built Not Bought sticker somewhere and decided to place it on the nanner beehive brace.

Scuffed it with some sandpaper and torched it a little with my mini-torch.

Then I dusted it with some of the brown rust textured paint

I like the ghosted look of shifter housing, so dusted the forks with a little textured rust paint too.

I also went ahead and coated the handlebars, kickstand, beehive springer, and chainguard with boiled linseed oil

For my bony butt that seat would put a hurtin on me in a hurry but it just looks so cool with the pan and the springs, the stripes are are Kabang!!:cool2:Party build on:thumbsup:!

You would be surprised how comfortable a well shaped seat pan with good springs can be. I still ride Flexy (BO7) with it's metal pan and it's as comfortable as any seat I have.

Seat is epic

Thanks Adam! This is my 4th build off and I just realized that none of my Build Off seats have had any padding at all.

Lots of awesome progress:eek: That sweet paint job is really tying everything together!

Thanks man! This is the fun part of a build. When you are putting everything back together in the final assembly. The only real paint job are the forks, but I am really pleased with how it turned out.

Oddly enough this is my first sprung seat I've used on a build off
