1 piece tire tube

Seen a skip tooth bike today that had a 1 piece tire tube on it. It simply looked like they glued tread to the outside of a tube. The guy said you just slipped the tire over the rim and aired it up. Does anyone have any ideas on these?

that was the way it was done back in the day, and even today you can buy singletube or sewups for your racing bikes and I think some cyclocross too.

Yep, that was a true 28" tire. Those are quite pricy to replace.

They have to be glued to the rim!
The tube is sewn up inside the tire!
Thay draw wind from far away places!

the bike shop I work at still installs tubular tires. you apply glue to the rim and put a few coats on the inside of the tire and let it set up then install it and air it up and let it tack and then wipe off the excess glue with denatured alcohol. they allow you to ride a road bike while running lower pressure without the risk of pinch-flatting.

I have these, really good concept but it failed so I had to cut them out and use regular tubes.

I was told it was to run more pressure! Most my sew ups were 120 psi.....

yes, most tubulars will hold 120-160 psi, but if you only wanted to run 30 psi, theres no worries about puncturing a tube

Did anyone else repair expensive racing tubulars in the 80s with this:

the kit came in a tin then.
