I picked up what I believe to be a 1956 Schwinn American today. It’s in rough shape for sure and it looks like it was painted gold over the original red using a dead chicken as a brush lol. The price was right and it had so much random stuff bolted to it that I couldn’t resist.

Cool bike! Welcome to the forum. You can probably remove that gold paint down to the original if there's any still on there, if that's what you are into. 👍

Thanks! It’s like a poor man’s pee wee bike. In one of the pics you can see they used half of a door hinge as a plate to screw the rear rack too lol
 
I haven’t done it myself but guys use 0000 steel wool, WD40 and lots of elbow grease. I’m sure there are other methods that work too. Maybe others will chime in.
