I am going to look at a 56(?) DX this afternoon, and was wondering if price is ok???

Guy wants $150.00 for it...He guessed at the age...I will be able to get a serial number when I see it in person. It's in rideable condition, complete with fenders, chain guard, and basket on front, but looks pretty (read VERY) rough. Was hoping to get out a resto project for sis' graduation gift for around 100-120, so this is going to put me over budget by a good amount.

I have pics he sent me via phone that I will upload in a bit if it helps.

Thoughts on price(s)???

Thanks,

Margo

Looks like an early fifties Schwinn DX Ballooner. Hard to tell from the pics what wheels are on it. Looks like it has the original schwinn fenders and guard. If it has the original S2 wheels it is definately worth the $150. If not then that is might be a little high, but it sure would be a cool bike for a project.
Serial number should be under the crank, if not it will be on the rear dropout.

Is there a trick to id wheels? S2, S5, and S7 are the main Schwinn types, yes?
If they are S2s they should have a stamping in the rim "Schwinn Tubular S2 (S7 etc.)", and will have a wide flat profile instead of a raised section like a drop center wheel.
S2s were schwinns balloon tire rim and will accept a lot of different 26 x 2.125 tires.

Bought for $120...sweetheart skiptooth new departure model d rear wheel. Looks like drop center rear, but front is wide flat profile. Tons of cool factor. Can't wait to get started.
Serial number on b.b. B94914. Older than 56 I'm guessing. Looks like maybe pre 48?
