My mother in law gave me this bike. It was painted red over EVERYTHING. It had been in an old man's yard for 15 years with flowers in the basket, used as lawn art. I was going to scrap it, until I gave the pedals a kick to unlock the rusted chain, and I road it the length of my driveway. I couldn't believe it was basically still ride-able. So the sucker in me changed the plan from scrapping, to stripping as much of the red paint off that would come off easily, repack all the bearings, and see if I can find a buyer, like a college student, that wants an ugly dependable bike to leave outside. It's so ugly, it won't get stolen. I only have $16 into the bike (two new tires).
before:
had to clamp the threaded bearing cone in the vise and use a pipe in the forks to get it off:
got 90% of the red paint stripped off, and most of the original black stayed in place:
what do you think, will I get my $16 back for the tires?
I rides and stops very well. The Bendix Red Band was like new inside. I was impressed with the quality of all the bearings and other parts. The old Schwinns are quality tanks.
