Hi,
I am going to buy a 1970 coal krate schwinn stingray. I am not a bike expert so i was just wondering if you guys can help me. Did they make the 1970 coal krate or is it a prototype. And how do i identify or authenticate if this bike really is what it is.
Thank you so much.

From what I understand there wasnt any Coal Krates made as for prototypes Im not sure. Ive seen a few black stingrays out there that people call black mambas but not sure if there real or just repaints

Wait so what is a tribute theme bike. Or custom krate. Is it mean that they did make coal krates but it was only prototypes or never made it just a fake?

Schwinn never made one, people have imaginations and make their own krate versions.

Oh so to win one is that rare? And so schwann never made one it's just a ghost story

Never heard of winning one as a prize from schwinn, never seen anything about schwinn making a coal krate. Ive seen more than a handful of coal krates that people have made though (painted it black, had decals made, put it together with original parts)

No, schwinn never made a koal krate. These are made by custom builders and bicycle enthusiasts to look like bicycles made by schwinn. You may have seen a custom built one for sale somewhere, I only know of one person to have built one, but that doesnt mean that other like minded enthusiasts havent built them.

According to the Schwinn Sting-Ray book by Liz Fried, it is an urban myth. I have seen one in person, a fake, but it was very convincing. All original parts with the same patina, very correct looking decals and lettering.

I too have seen some really good imposters. Schwinn never mass produced one not even for a short time. Is that to say there are none out there? Not at all look at grape krate two prototypes were made. Well black seems like an obvious choice as a color

"Tribute" bikes are becoming pretty common. I would assume it is something somebody made, rather than a rare prototype. If someone is offering it for sale as a prototype and asking less than $1000 for it, be wary. "Blueberry Krates" are becoming more and more common now, my buddy has one. Walmart blue Krate with custom stickers. Looks very convincing to the untrained eye.
