This is the first bike I ever bought myself. Its a 1971 Murray steel diamond frame 5 speed. Originally orange metallic. I "misplaced" it about 10 years ago, thought it was gone , a visit to my brother's house found it hanging in his garage, covered in grease and grime. So, took it home, stripped it to bare metal, sent it to my painter who laid the Black Mica base/clear. All new bearings, races, axles, chain, freewheel, tires/tubes, seat, grips, lights. Trued the wheels, polished the existing chrome (which somehow survived 37 years with NO pitting!), recabled it, and here you have it. Black racer was my everyday transportation for about 6 years. I estimate him to have no less than 3000 miles covering the City of Miami in my youth. And he rides as good now as when new. I LOVE THIS BIKE!!!!

Re: The bike that started me on this journey

great story for the bike. many older 10 speeds had killer frames. Good to see it still in use.

Re: The bike that started me on this journey

Thanks. It is a killer frame, the geometry is just about perfect. I've never had a bike before or since that "fits" like this one. I'll post the female twin to it that I found a few years ago that I built for my bride. Its a 1985...the last year for a real american made Murray.

Re: The bike that started me on this journey

Great story and bike RZ. I had a few bikes that I wish would be "misplaced" like that.

Re: The bike that started me on this journey

and the female version......the better half's bike....1985 Murray 10 speed, last of the American made Murray's....had drop bars, wife said no way, so turned it into a nice grocery getter for her. Wide pull back bars, removable basket, new seat. Hey, she likes it, what else matters!

nice murrays. i have an 86' murray monteray ss cruiser that i converted into a 5speed cruiser. thought mine was american made in tennesse, but i just missed the cusp i guess. also have a 93' westport ss cruiser, also made in tennesee. why do you say 85' was the last year of real american made murrays? did they sell their name like alot of other makes did? just wondering.

From what information I could find at Murray's web site, '85 was the last year they actually built bikes in the US. Moe than likely anything after that is chinese or tiwanese...
