2 speed slips

A friend of mine up in ND has a 61 Skipper with a yellow band 2 speed. The hub came from a Schwinn Breeze with very little wear on it. He says it slips in either gear when he pedals moderately hard. He says he hasn't lubed it or oiled it, so I wonder if that might be the problem. Anyone have any background on this?

The grease in those hubs is about 40+ yrs old by now. Before you attempt a diagnosis, it needs to be rebuilt. I've rebuilt 20 of these kickbacks and there were only a couple that I could not get to work. I use white lithium grease on all the parts except the index spring. I use oil on it. Gary
