Just picked it up. No badge but looked like a Swhinn spocket. The key in the locking fork had paint on it. Scratch it with my thumb nail "Arnold Schwinn" it says. Numbers puts manufactur date at Jan. 16 to 19, 1953. Got it for the parts but.....

Great save, totally worth $20. it would be a awesome bike to use one of the TRM convertible tanks on.
 
It's earlier than 1953, with those dropouts. It's for sure pre-1946, when the dropouts switched to forward facing.
The serial is on the Bottom bracket, won't work with the lookup tools. Since the records before 48 are gone, in a fire, we can estimate what year by the number and features of the bike.
If the number begins with "H" then it's prewar, because it looks like they started with "A" after the war because the postwar "H" is 1953.

You definitely got your money's worth!
