It can be done, thought its kinda dumb, and the tires are WAY over the recommended width of the rim.

I had some time to kill, so I went to the garage. Thought I would share:

The narrow rims bring the tire width down to a little over 3-1/4

I thought maybe it would fit my 29er that I am trying to sell. ALMOST:

Actually, if the fork didn't get narrower where the brace is, they would have fit and I would be reconsidering selling this bike!

BUT- if someone wanted to take an old trike and put fat tires on the back, its totally doable!!!! (now I need to find an old trike...)

Thanks! If this 29er doesn't sell I may have to cut it when my second fork is done!

I was wondering if that would work. I know some people put OCC 20x4 tires on regular rims and they looked pretty cool.

I wonder if the beast tires on smaller rims would fit between an OCC triple tree fork?

I don't know if you could get them on a much smaller rim 17mm is pretty narrow.

kingfish254, any idea how wide the 20x4 is on a regular rim is?

No I don't. It seems like the user that I remember doing that was Outlaw or something like that. Maybe do a search for OCC tire.

Possible you could 'relieve' the fork brace to take that tire. Id use my fancy dbl. ended caliper to check the thickness at that contact spot and calc. how much I could remove. (my calipers has a pivot in the middle and jaws on each end, when you measure in a place like that you can see/measure the gap on the outboard end)

@blown240 I noticed at my local walmart 3 huffy Fortress midfat bikes with 26 x 3.0 tires on them but i dont know the rim size. Since you put 26 x 4.0 tires on a 17mm rim,do you think i can put 26 x 4.0 tires on a rim that takes a 26 x 3.0 tires?
If you think i can,i would have no problem cutting and re-welding the rear dropouts and front fork to accommodate the 26 x 4 tires from rubbing.
The reason i am asking is because the Huffy fortress is only $129 at my local walmart and my money is kiinda tight right now. Thank you
Here is a link to the bike: http://www.walmart.com/ip/26-Huffy-Men-s-Fortress-Mountain-Bike-Blue/49058108

They probably fit on the rims, but I don't know if your going to be able to have chain line clearance with those cranks. Hard to say if the bottom bracket is wide enough.
