I have 2 different kinds of old 3 speed hubs one has a pin and the other a tiny chain. now is there a way to check if their any good off the bike or would i have to put them on a bike and test them?

Put the wheel in a fork or something to hold it spin the sprocket with one hand and push the pin in if the resistand changes wheel goes faster etc then it works. For the chain one pull the chain and do the same.

The "pin" type is a Shimano hub, and it shifts by pushing the pin or rod inwards. The "little chain" type is a Sturmey Archer and that chain screws in to a shifting fork in the hub and changes gears by being pulled outwards.
