you can always spray the seat with a flat clear coat and rock it just the way it is.

I would but one of the bolt holes is rusted out on top and the edges are soft. Not sure its strong enough. I think I'm going to try to replicate the original pan

Re: 36 Elgin Rebuild

Since thats a Nice pan I would personally just remove the rust and ride it bare steel, you might be able to re-skin it though. This is actually easier than it sounds, go down to your dollar general buy enough bottles of regular ol' vinegar to fill a plastic tupperware container big enough to fit the seat in. plop it in, leave it for about 3-4 days, maybe less (check it each day, cause it'll eat the steel after too long) take it out when it looks like there's as much rust as you think'll come off without eating away at all the metal, take it down to the carwash and blast it off. It should ALL strip down nicely, hit it with a touch of PB blaster or some sort of oil (or else itll flash rust). VIOLA! looks neat too, like chemical sandblasting.

And since this is a nice seat that could probably use it, I'll share some secret squirrel hotrodder info that a lot guys might not know...

If you guys can keep a secret,
3-5 parts Molasses to 1 part water will eat away rust perfectly - but not steel or iron. 8)

I dig it, have fun buildin'!

Re: 36 Elgin Rebuild 1/8

Finally finished!

Cut out a rough seat shape from an old metal shelf. Pounded and ground it the best I could. It's far from perfect. I covered the edges in electrical tape since they were a little sharp still. Didn't like the look on this bike. I remembered I had what was left of the original cover, so I took the seat apart and put it under the rails on the bottom. Has about 5 layers on top, so a couple down I used plastic stretch wrap to hold the front cover down, then I rolled up packing tape between the rest of the layers to hold it down. I think it fits the look perfect. Also think it looks better in person.

Then I added the drop stand clip, a pair of nice Torriginton pedals (still working on the originals) and a nicer set of the same grips it came with.

This was my test seat, not the original one for the bike. But it will stay for now
