Re: Prewar Girls Bike ?ELGIN?

Elgins were a sears brand... I just bought a set of skirtguards, chainguards, and fender from an old Elgin that are Identical to this one. And the solid sprocket, Definitely Elgin.

Re: Prewar Girls Bike ?ELGIN?

Definitely an Elgin. Early to mid 1940's, I would guess. The curved seat tube, unique skirtguards, solid chainring, fork through the fender, chainguard and oddly shape fenders are all distinct, 1940's Elgin characteristics. Cool find! Is Edna Lother engraved into the frame in a factory way?

BrigmasterA is right in saying that Elgins were a Sears bike. Elgin was the name of the sporting goods line at sears from the teens or so up untill about 1945. At some point right about WW2, Sears changed the name of the sporting goods line from Elgin to J.C. Higgins in honor of John Higgins, a well respected head employee of Sears who I believe had recently passed away at that time of name change. The "C" in J.C. Higgins was added so that the new line name sounded "better" when spoken, as John Higgins had no middle name or initial. :D Great find!

Thats an Elgin Special. I just took one apart so if you need any parts let me know and I might have them for you. I can see that you need a headbadge and the tank as of right now.

different sized letters than the "SE" "SER" and "MOD" but it looks stamped in. maybe a little weak but definately not edna's dad with an engraver

ill try to take a better pic, kinda hard to get it to show up.

Try running a black marksalot across it and then when it dries rub some steen wool on it and nothing will be left but the black in the numbers and letters.

I just picked up a J C Higgins girls bike somewhat like yours but it has smooth fenders, different chainwheel and skirting. I posted a photo in the Gallery section in case you wanna check it out, if you haven't already. Yours is a lot nicer condition.

this one might be a lil nicer but the higgins has definitely got cooler parts with the rack and springer on it. i think this one is gonna get the boot though, cool bike but ive got plenty of projects already and completed ones that need ridden too
