Here is the seventh (and final!) edition of a Hawthorne men's bike I purchased through the forums here back in September. The build is really a full customization... or, has become that. I planned to throw a chain on and ride it but that never works for me. No challenge! The bike is SO close to being finally complete, all I need are some smaller parts I am excitedly awaiting from other members (thanks, guys! RRB has kept this one alive). Since it was last posted, I put some killer bars on there with plenty or rust and pullback, dropped the seat down with a modified lucky 7, added the tool bag, changed the front fender, tires, added the mirror, cut and re-welded my new trusses (eliminated about an inch of length from the lower ends). Not in the photos is the period chrome tire pump I just finished mounting... when I get my staged "barn find" pictures with old lightning darts on the bike and a brake cable for the drum brake up front, the tire pump will be visible.

As it was found:

As it stands now: ( First try with the B/W setting, what do you think?)

Re: 7 makes a Lead Sled

I neglected to mention that today I rode this bike on the longest ride of it's life under my ownership, having received it later in the fall when I was busy. hauling a two speed 70+ pound bike is a chore after a winter of less intense exercise. It was fun nonetheless and this one sparked a lot of conversation at the (busy) town store where I stopped for an iced tea. :D

Re: 7 makes a Lead Sled

Thanks Joey. If all goes well the bike should be 100% done by the end of next week.

This is the bike I would've taken on the Monson ride, it reeks that I couldn't stay long enough for that this year. Looks like you guys had a blast! Next year I think I should be able to stay long if it is to happen again. :D

bike looks really sweet! makes me want to drag out the hawthorne ive been sitting on for about a year!

Thanks... and you should. :D I love these frames, they have such nice lines. Unfortunately they are a little tall... This style Hawthorne men's 26 inch frame is actually taller than other men's ballooner frames of that size that I've had- hence the lucky seven seat post. That made it a LOT more comfortable, and I like the way it looks. Thanks for the comments!

Re: 7 makes a Lead Sled

By the way, thank you texasbigjon, for answering my question about tires over on the Sneaky Pete build thread. I saw your grand tycoon WW and then found these Duro tires, they ride and look amazing and fill the space like the tycoons.... the bike just glides now.

Re: 7 makes a Lead Sled

I meant to take pictures during some of the changes and forgot, it would ahve been ncie to have had a comparison... this springer has actually been rebuilt several times. The original wheel mount dropout ends were very rusty (the springer came from the frame chimichanga is building, so i hear ) and were constantly bending when I put the front wheel in place. I got out the cutter wheel and a solid (but very bent) parts springer and made a franken-fork... this fork is now on the bike and actually came out pretty well perfect.

Re: 7 makes a Lead Sled

I should knwo by now that rats are never completed... minor modifications in this bike's future, I scored this killer guard from another forum member and it will be replacing the original guard... I think it will give it a cleaner, more refined look...

Who made these guards? Is it a Luxury Liner CWC guard or Murray Western Flyer?

Re: 7 makes a Lead Sled

Updated pictures! unfortunately they are in the paint covered shop as the weather reeks. I got my new chainguard on (Thanks Gotavan!) as well as my rusty Monson find pump which I rebuilt (I paid $5 for it at the show because it didn't work; I added a new seal and it now works mint). I added some SWEET Carlisle Lightning Dart Whitewalls for the looks (thanks CCR for a sweet deal on those!). (Thank you Crassly for the bars, bag, pump parts, headlight lens and advice on the headlight issue- it's almost fixed).

Future plans:

(Actually ride the bike! It has been a long winter...) I'm hoping to find a 1957 Delta headlight with the factory visor, and I'm getting some rattier red block pedals from a forum member on another site.

Thanks! Still some little things but it's pretty well wrapped up... Now comes the orange Krate. Poor thing has pretty much been under a tarp all winter.

Nice Job Chris, You did a great job waiting for just the right parts you wanted, By the way, I do not have the spokes you are looking for. Rick
