70s UNIVEGA BMX PROJECT - DONE!!!!

I've had this frame and fork set from this little 70s UNIVEGA Path Finder BMX bike for a while now and it had a bent fork.

It's a neat little frame with an extra gusset down near the BB kind of like the early Motomag frames did.

Decided to pull it off the wall and mock it up. May end up having it powder coated and running a slammed Jr nanner seat to give it the moto effect.

The only weird thing about it is that the headset is smaller than a normal BMX headset. Not sure what it would be.

About to straighten the bent fork with a little brute force...Chevy style...

Here it is so far...

It's been a few months since I got my hands greasy

that's pretty sweet!!!
looks to be old technology to strengthen the bottom bracket area and prevent buckling the frame.
pretty neat frame and in excellent shape.

Cool lookin' bike.
I wouldn't be confident enough in my driving skills to bend a fork like that. But that's a great idea.

Actually I just have three pair, but this is my spare set that I swap around to mock up bikes.

Is it a road size headset then? Most univegas I've seen (all of them actually) were road bikes, makes sense if so.

I went to Mountain View, Arkansas once for a music festival and they had outhouse races there.. One of the "racers" had a set of Motomag's on it and I tried to buy them off the guy but he wouldn't sell them to me.. So now they stay out in the rain on his outhouse racer..

Nah, I think those got sold on a Motmag I let go a while back.

I've probably had 7 or 8 pair of the wheels in the last 2 years.

Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a whole Motomag bike, keep the wheels and part the rest of it out to recoup your investment.

The Mongoose stamped parts bring big bucks these days.

So today it was sunny, no wind and nearly 70 degrees so I decided to sand and paint the UNIVEGA frame.

I had some Valspar spray paint from Lowes that is the primer/paint combo...

Got the frame sanded down...

The paint went on really smooth and and has a real nice gloss to it...

I'll let it dry over night and hopefully I can start installing parts tomorrow.

Got it all put together today...

The Valspar paint went on really nicely...

Still trying to decide if I want to have some custom decals made up for it or not.

Looks great, you thinking just copying the "Univega" on the back of the seat to make some downtube decals?

That's a good question.

Might even just create my own custom 70s style decals for fun.
