ahhhh disc brakes!

quick and simple
i REALYYYYYYYYYYYY want some discbrakes but two things
A.cost
B. do they fit on any bike or do they have to have a certain width in the forks and stays?
or do you have to buy certain forks and not have rear brakes

A good question is just what bike do you want it on? do you just want disks on the back? or both front and back?

My Slick Daddy has coaster on the back and disks up front. With this set up you need a special hub to hold the disk on the rim and forks that have a bracket to hold the caliper.

ya need a hub that the is threaded for mounting the disc to. ya also need mounts either welded or brazed to the fork or frame tubes to mount the caliber to. cable or manaully operated systems are not that expensive now, its getting the bike to accept them that can be costly. disc brakes look cool, but on a non motorized bicycle theyre not necessary. i ride gravity bikes and even with a fully leathered rider and 20 lbs of barbells bolted to the bike v-brakes work just fine, and im goin over 60mph on a good hill. disc brakes on road bikes are a cosmetic addition for the most part, v-brakes will lock up your wheels just as fast as discs, and in fact they wont "catch" as easy as discs so ya actually have better control with rim brakes. if yer not gettin all muddy, i would mess with discs personally. just my 2 cents,

I really wanted disc brakes too so I made my own mounts for both front and back.http://www.ratrodbikes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5868

Neither the frame or the fork had existing disc mounts. A) As far as cost goes I got my calipers for $30 off ebay. Often you can find full sets of levers discs and calipers for around $50. They wont be super high end but they will get the job done. The adapters I made didn't cost me a thing except some hacksawing and time. B) DIsc brakes can fit any bike if you can make the correct mount. You will need disc hubs I suggest going with the standard 6 hole instead of 4 hole or Shimano CenterLock hubs because 6 hole hubs are the most common and cheap. When you get your discs mounted to your hubs and hubs attached to frame/fork you will be able to place the caliper on the disc and start mocking up your adapters to attach to your frame.

Check in your area for a cheap disc wheelset on pinkbike. Make sure the front wheel does not have a 20mm axle unless your going to be running a through axle suspension fork http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/

if you really want disc brake plan on about a 100.00 per wheel to do it with new parts ...it can cost more or less if you find a donor

bicycle designer has a set for like 80 bucks but no bracket and choppersus.com has a billet bracket for a type of fork but there kind of pricey
