My grandfather was also an aviator in the Navy - delivered numerous B-17s from here to across the pond into England during WW II. I know someone will try to correct me because the B17 was mostly used by the USAAC but he was in the Navy, I'm certain of it!
The Navy did fly some B-17's towards the end of the war. But the B-24 was used in greater numbers because of its greater range. Bombers were used to anti-submarine, anti-surface warfare for good success.

USMC 1983-1991. One deployment on the USS Tarawa. DesertShield/Storm. Phrogs forever!
My late dad was in the Navy right after the Korean conflict; USS Hassayampa.
My son is in Marine ROTC in college. No scholarship yet. He is having fun anyway (while I pay the bills).
My father in law retired from the National Guard.
My brother in law is in the Navy reserve.
Two of my uncles served.
All came home safe and sound.
Freedom isn't free and you really see that when you travel around the world.
