I'm new to all the bicycle stuff but have had a ton of fun riding and tinkering on the two older bikes I bought. I have a early 60s Hawthorne mens 26" bike that currently has 26x1.75 tires on it and I'd like to put 26x2.125 cream ballon tires on it. It has the original tire/wheel currently and I didn't know if the original wheel would hold the new width tire. Being new to all this I'm having to learn as I go.

Look at the tires on the bike now. Tell us ANY and ALL numbers and info present on the sidewalls... That could help.

ps- usually, if it's got decimals (26x1.75), it'll be the regular 559mm common ballooner 26" rim. But, the older schwinn s-7s were called 26x1 3/4". I don't know if your bike may have had those (which measure 571mm at the bead) originally, but with bikes of that vintage, it's common to find that someone has swapped wheelsets at some point in history....
