Anyone converted a heavyweight ballooner to a derailer system? is it a fairly easy conversion?thanks AJ

Look thru the "show your" klunkers section, seems to be a bolt on derailer hanger of some sort there using(i dont know either). Some1 will chime in soon about it im sure.

I have done many. A mtn bike donor is the best for the rear wheel, brakes and shifter. You will have to spread the rear drop-outs to fit the wider cassette wheel. I use a 2x4 wrapped in a towel and a hammer. Be sure the derailleur is one that slides in the drop-out and has a clench bolt/clamp. Mount the shifter and run the cable. You may need a new, longer cable as cruisers are a little lengthier.
Then adjust the high and low derailleur screws to stop the chain from running off either end of the gear set. Add the brakes, levers and cables (single post clamp style). You may have to mount the rear brake under the frame for brake pad reach and maybe have to drill front fork for that brake. Most are already drilled for a fender mount. Oh and if you have fenders.. you'll have to check brake clearances and maybe have to trim for chain clearance. LOL . Seems like a lot but it's worth it if you ride hilly areas like where I am. :D Good luck!

You will have to lose the chain guard if you want front gears too. This one is a 6 speed on the rear. Works great!

Oh , you will need to use the smaller derailleur chain too, plus about 6 inches because the cruiser is usually about 3 inches longer from axle to crank than a mtn bike. Also the front chainring must fit the smaller chain.

This is the only special part you need.

I used an indexed thumbshifter and linear shift cable housing and zip ties to route it along the frame.
