Bendix Red Band axle size/tpi?

Do Bendix red band (single speed) hubs take 3/8 24 tpi axles (like most modern coaster hubs)? I have two I need axles for, and I didn't have a spare to see if the bits would thread on.

If not, what axle do I need?


Also, for the sake of already having your attention on a Bendix question, I have a bendix hub where the brake are is stamped 'mexico 76', and there is no band on the shell. What if any, are the differences to the red band?

Yes, they take 3/8 x 24tpi. Wheels Manufacturing makes a nice Cromo one; it´s the #34 model. i´ve used it successfully when rebuilding a Bendix Red Band 2. Some retailers list it as 3/8 x 24tpi, others as 9.5mm x 24tpi.

But you could just swap in one from a Shimano cb-e110 or a KT/ Hi-Stop. If ou run into problems with bending them, get the WM#34.

As for differences between the 76 and the Red Band, there ain´t many significant ones--mostly the brake shoes-- but i think pats interchangeability is low. Very similar design, but enough rambling. Here´s the scan from the Sutherland´s book:

Makes sense. I did try to put one of the bendix nuts on a shimano hub I had layin round, and it didn't go. Thus my post. Should have tried a lock nut. But the hub was already rebuilt, didn't wanna take it off.

I just got the chance to check out that pdf. Thanks for the link 808!

I bought a box of parts a bit back and there were 4 bendix hubs in there. One and a half disembled, a nice red band 2, and a mexico 76. One of the partially assembled looks to be a RB with the 'teeth' to hold the cog.

Nice. Those are some really nice hubs. RB2 are my favorite singlespeed Bendix. Just remember, the 3 splined sprockets for Bendix are a bit differently sized than the Sturmey-Archer pattern which has since become the standard. You´ll want to find real Bendix sprockets unless you´re handy with a file, in which case you can modify Shimano/Sturmey/SRAM rear sprockets to fit....

I'm handy enough I'm sure I could manage. Luckily, the cogs i've got are in decent shape, and 18t (46-18 is my go to ratio).
