I think its funny how every Schwinn style spring fork is called a "springer" when they are technically "girder" forks.

I think that would the front fork since some call the place where the rear wheel bolts on the rear fork and some call it dropouts!

never heard it called a rear fork. i've allways heard it called the "drop outs" or "axle plates"

ok. i was pokin' around on the interweb earlier today and saw a schwinn ad from '46 or '47 and they did call the rear the rear fork.
if i can find the pic or link i'll show it.

I'm 58, and when I was a kid all the adults called the Schwinn springfork "knee action". I always thought that was kind of dumb because the fork don't work like your knee at all. :? Gary

Schwinn was not responsible for the "Knee Action" moniker, it came from an earlier friction shock for cars. Much of the design DNA for Schwinn's bikes in the 30's came from cars and motorcycles of the previous two decades.

Here is a 1914 Triumph with a fork that looks familiar http://www.ohioconcours.com/2002/m-02-3923.jpg , A simple design for Schwinn to reproduce, how many decades later? Old Cleveland motorcycles used this kind of fork too.

I guess the knee action name depended on what way you were facing the bike?
